Having lost her mother at a young age, Jasmine grew up as the sole child of the Sultan of Agrabah. Compared to many women, or other princess in nearby lands, Jasmine enjoyed a certain amount of freedom granted by her loving father. Unlike other Princess's in surrounding areas, her father allowed her to become educated in subjects that were normally reserved for males only. He involved her in court politics, often asking her how she would handle a situation and training her to take over as Sultana when it is time.
As the law states that she is to marry by her 16th
year, Jasmine and her father are at odds for a while as she wants to marry for love and her father wants to see her married and safe. He becomes frustrated with her when she rejects suitor after suitor, even allowing Rajah, her pet tiger, to attack one of them. Jasmine fears that if she marries one of the men her father wants, she will be marry for wealth and power, only being “arm candy” for the man and his property instead of being valued as a person.
Frustrated that she has no friends and has never been outside of the palace walls before, she runs away, disguised as a peasant. Her naivety of being locked behind the castle walls her entire life, she gets into trouble, when she gives an apple to a young boy without paying for it. Before the merchant can extract punishment by cutting her hand off, Aladdin manages to step in and saves by claiming Jasmine is his mentally-ill sister. Jasmines quickly catches on to what he’s doing, and plays along, pretending that Abu, Aladdin’s monkey companion, is the Sultan and the camel is her doctor. Eventually they make their way back to where Aladdin is staying, where they share their dreams, Aladdin’s to be rich and Jasmine’s to be free. Before they are able to kiss, some palace guards lead by Razoul, the head of the royal guards, arrived. Jasmine reveals herself to him and demands that they let him go, but Razoul refuses, stating that this is on Jafars orders. Returning to the castle, Jasmine demands that Aladdin be freed, but Jafar lies to her and tells her that he has already been executed, leaving Jasmine extremely distraught. She blames herself and remembers she never learned his name.
The next day, a new suitor arrives, Prince Ali. Jasmine initially dismisses him, believing him to be just another arrogant suitor, her heart still hurting for her unnamed love. He meets her later on the balcony and convinces her to take a ride on his magic carpet. She begins to fall in love with Prince Ali, but quickly notices that he has many of the same habits as the unnamed boy she had begun to love the day before. After they watch fireworks, she tricks him into admitting the truth. He further lies to her in an attempt to calm her down, claiming he sometimes dresses up as a peasant to escape castle life, something Jasmine can relate to. When he takes her back to the castle, they share their first kiss.
An excited Jasmine rushes to tell her father about Prince Ali and how she will marry him, but before she can her father shocks her by telling her she is to marry Jafar. When Jafar goes to inform her that Prince Ali has left, Aladdin appears revealing that Jafar had attempted to kill him. The Sultan, who is secretly being controlled by Jafar, agrees with Jafar that Aladdin is lying. Realizing what Jafar is doing, he smashes magical staff, freeing the Sultan and causing Jafar to flee. Once reunited in each other’s arms, Jasmine announces her decision to marry Aladdin.
The next day, Jafar is able to steal Genie from Aladdin and wishes to be Sultan, thus taking over Agraba. When Jasmine refuses to bow to Jafar, he reveals that Aladdin is actually the peasant boy that Jasmine had first met by forcefully using his magic. Sending Aladdin to the ends of the earth, Jafar makes Jasmine his personal slave. Having to watch her father be tortured by Iago, soon causes Jasmine to beg Jafar to make Iago stop. He offers her a chance to become his queen, using his magic to turn her chains into a crown. She refuses, splashing wine in his face. He nearly punches her in his rage, but gets a better idea. He commands Genie to make her fall in love with him.
Seeing that Aladdin has returned, Jasmine is able to distract Jafar by pretending she is in love with him and seduces him. In order to save Aladdin from being seen, she begins to compliment everything about Jafar, even going so far as to kiss him. It almost works, but Jafar sees Aladdin’s reflection in Jasmine’s crown. Enraged, he imprisons her in an hourglass that quickly begins to fill with sand. She nearly suffocates but Aladdin saves her in time. After tricking Jafar into becoming his own genie in order to capture him, Jasmine forgives Aladdin for all of his lives. She grieves over the fact that due to the law, they cannot be together. Genie suggests that Aladdin use his last wish to regain his Princely status to be with her, instead Aladdin uses his last wish to free the genie, keeping his promise. The Sultan, who has witnessed everything, realizes that Aladdin’s love for Jasmine is pure and that by saving the kingdom, he has proved his worth. The Sultan abolishes the law, saying that Jasmine is free to marry who she wishes. She chooses Aladdin and they bid Genie farewell who is off to travel the world.
Sometime later, Jasmine begins questioning her choice of Aladdin when he defends Iago, who had tortured her father. Iago helps her realize that she does indeed love him and calls her bluff. She apologizes to Iago as well, which nearly causes him to confess that the carpet ride Aladdin is taking the Sultan on is a trap and that Jafar has returned. Jafar manages to capture Jasmine and impersonate her in an attempt to kill Aladdin. It is Jasmine’s anger and disappointment with Iago which convinces the bird to free Genie. After they defeat Jafar, Jasmine accepts his friendship and leaves with Aladdin to see the world.
After their adventures they return to Agrabah and are finally to be wed, but before they can the wedding is interrupted by the Forty Thieves. After they discover what they were after and learning from the Oracle that Aladdin’s father, Cassim, is alive, Jasmine urges Aladdin to find his father and that their marriage can wait a bit longer. While he is gone, Jasmine worries and Genie attempts to cheer her up by dressing her in various marriage dresses. Returning with his father, Jasmine and the Sultan take a quick liking to him. Cassim is thrown in prison after he attempts to steal the oracle. After helping his father escape, Aladdin returns for punishment but Jasmine is able to convince the Sultan, with the help of Genie, that Aladdin had done this out of love. Iago rushes in to inform them that Cassim has been captured by Sa’luk and the remaining Thieves. Aladdin, Jasmine and co rush to save Cassim and afterwards return to finish their wedding where Cassim watches from the shadows. They take off on Carpet, waving to the merchant and kiss passionately.Storyline Specific Information: Helpless Girls:
