Come discuss anything about the show.
Who is/are you favorite character(s) and why?
What dueling songs or music in general did you like from the series?
What are you thoughts on some themes in the show?

I'll start off by saying that every character in the series was interesting. Everything I know of this series is based off the anime and the movie. I haven't had the chance to read the manga but hope to do so in the future.

Juri Arisugawa is by far my favorite character. For one, I love her personality. I like the fact that she's serious, a bit pompous but not arrogant and reserves her feelings. She reminds me a lot of Michiru which is why I love the character. Another aspect that I like about her is her character design. She is very neat draw and put together. Her hair is almost always neatly curled and she's very well put together. As for her back story, I think she's the most interesting character in that respect. I love melodrama so as one can imagine I was enthralled by her story. I personally thought that Juri Aisugawa could have been dedicated a lot more shows and the she have even had her own show.

This topic neeeeeds more love. I've only seen the first twelve episodes of Utena so far (I've been watching it with irl friends and don't want to get ahead) but it's amazing. One thing I think is amusing is that Juri and Miki are voiced by the actresses who did Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury respectively, especially since the two seem to be close (at least in the parts I've watched). I probably won't settle on an overall favorite character until I've seen the whole series but for the moment I really admire Utena. I love how she's comfortable enough with herself to do typically "boy" things but still be really feminine in her own way, whereas a lot of female characters in other works have to swing drastically one way or the other.

Watch this space. I'm yet to finish watching Utena however the opening theme song is my ring tone... Go figure.

Wink But still, watch this space. I'll most likely be bringing some love to the thread. Haha.

I watched this last semester with my roommate and seriously...this anime was really amusing but also CONFUSING! Though we did watch the dubbed.

Sarah: Did you ever finish watching the series?

Lizzy: The anime was definetly amusing and confusing but that's the fun of it.
It's so mind blowing that you're left asking yourself what you just watched.
I dislike most dubs and I'll say that I watched subbed version.
I feel like the characters wouldn't be themselves without the original Japanese seiyu.

Watched the entire series with my brother and saw the movie. Utena is my favorite (and while I love both designs I find myself a bit more partial to her movie design). I like her personality and the break from traditional gender roles. Haven't read the manga though.

This anime is definitely high up in my "top 5" list. It's amazing. All those visual metaphors. I don't have words to give this series the justice it deserves, but I seriously advise anyone to check it out. It destroys gender roles, but also delves into other dark subjects of human nature and relationships.

Also, the filler episodes were hilarious. The infamous curry switch and Nanami's designer cowbell. XD

Don't forget the egg laying episode!

I love this series but its also confusing at the same time and left a lot of questions at the end as well. I love the opening song though and the first ending theme. Though I'm still ticked at Anthy for what she did near the end.

Though I wanted to ask, does anybody know where to find the movie? Adolescence of Utena?

I adore Utena. ♥ (In general, I'm all about Kunihiko Ikuhara and his projects.) It's such an unusual and gorgeous show. I like forcing unsuspecting friends to watch it with me; they are never prepared.

My favourite duel song is definitely "Internal Clock, Municipal Orrery" (Tainai Tokei Toshi ORUROI). All of J.A. Caesar's compositions are so intriguing! They're quite unlike other music being used in series at the time. I love them all.

As far as "finding" the movie, this probably isn't what you meant, but it's included in set 3 of the remastered rerelease. It's not too hard to find people reselling the first DVD release of the movie, either, usually for less than $5.

Only 39? That's not so bad. Did the manga or anime come first?

The manga came first. It was finished up in 1997, the same year that the anime began airing.

Oh wow, and they managed to stretch it to 39 episodes? Did it deviate from the source material much, as in changing characters personalities and story elements like plotpoints or foreshadowing? Is the filler tolerable?

So which do you prefer? The anime or the manga? As someone who knows very little about Utena, which should I start with?

I like them both, but the anime is the more well-known version, so I guess you should start there, even though it's easier to understand the manga...

Thanks for the input. I know you can find it easily online. I was planning on checking out both, so I guess I'll read the manga afterward.

The anime deviates significantly from the manga. It is more symbolic/allegorical and includes greater universe expansion and character development. The anime is considered to be director Kunihiko Ikuhara's masterwork. His partnership with the manga author, Chiho Saito, allowed him freedom to reimagine her story within the concepts of his imagination. She was consulted during the series, but did not influence the direction of the anime.

If I recall correctly, Black Rose is a side story in the manga, rather than an entire arc.

As far as the "filler," branches were added to the central plot and episodes dedicated to the development of each character. There are the humorous "Nanami episodes," which are nonsensical and incredibly silly side plots based on Nanami's continued failed schemes. These are inserted into the story to break up the pacing when an episode has a darker theme and is generally significant to the overall plot. I've always enjoyed them because they're so weird.

I think that whether you start with the anime or the manga, the two are dissimilar enough that you can't rely on knowing one to understand the other. Just don't start with the movie! XD

I just started getting into Utena. Only because of the Anime Watching club on here... I really am liking it so far, more than I thought I would. I'm intrigued as to the whole Rose Brida and dueling thing. Where did it come from? Who is End of the World? What's up with that castle? I'm only on episode three, but I plan on watching more later tonight.

Oh just wait. Utena is one of the most awesome plotted anime I have ever watched! Let me know what you think when you reach that point in the story.

I don't want to say too much more before it gets discussed, but I will say I do like the singers with the first 13 episodes with the dueling arena more than the later episodes.
