I've already finished it and I really enjoyed it. Plan on watching the movie when I have the chance.

You'll enjoy the movie. It's beautifully animated and there's tons of symbolism everywhere.

So my interest has been renewed in this show lately (unfortunately because of that I know a lot of spoilers). I really, REALLY want to start it over again, but I hear later on it gets pretty sexual. Is it still worth it despite that? It sounds really god what with it's deconstruction of fairy tale archetypes, normal shoujo conventions, and symbolic depiction of loss of innocence and growing up. Still, is it that bad in that way?

I really tried to get into this anime for Anime Watching Club, but for some reason it was just too...weird and confusing xD Plus I'm kind of stereotypical in that I want 'princess' characters to be elegant and pretty and...I just didn't like the so-called princess's design in this one. I may try to get back into this anime some other time, though.

So, I never read too far into the manga and I've never watched the anime, but I did enjoy what of the manga I did read. I'm not sure how the anime is different from the manga, but, maybe, Sailor Pluto, you could try reading a few chapters of the manga to see if it strikes your fancy any differently? I love the concept of this series.

Not really. The sexual parts are relevant to the plot and just as symbolic/important to the anime because of the various themes about adulthood and maturity. Overall, it doesn't detract from the show at all in my opinion.

Also the manga isn't that long and overall is the same as the anime although there are some differences (it's shorter, some characters are portrayed differently, and some characters in the anime aren't in the anime). To me the anime is the superior version (it fleshes out the story and characters a lot more) and honestly if you didn't like the anime, you probably won't like the manga either.

Alright. I will probably begin watching it soon then.

Also I pretty much figured the sexual stuff was a part of the "loss of innocence" themes.

I finally got around to watching this last year as I got it for my birthday. It is a pretty weird series and I love the first ending theme! The movie has to be the strangest anime movie I've ever watched.

I just started watching it again last night. Kinda forgot how much I liked it (and how good the music was!).

Just an fyi that all the episodes of Revolutionary Girl Utena (sub) are officially on Youtube now. Most of the episodes were up on there before but some were missing. Highly recommend watching!  Smile

Yay! I'll try to watch it more now, between episodes of EVA, Sailor Moon R, and RWBY.

So I just finished the first arc (haven't seen the clips how episode yet though) and all I can think is, "Man, how's Juri gonna react to her sword being broken?"

Wow it's pretty awesome that this old title is still being discovered! I feel like this is an anime that actually augmented my enjoyment and obsession with Sailor Moon. I saw Utena after reading the SM manga (and watching most of the episodes up to Stars I think which I then saw soon afterwards). So, the art from the SM manga and the Utena anime aesthetics really reinforced each other for me. And all the character complexities and basically more adult characters in Utena really made me appreciate the feels that Sailor Moon’s cast gave me in their more relative innocence. At the same time, seeing just how messed up people can be *cough*Anthy*cough* also gave me new appreciation for the glimpses of problems that the Sailor Moon characters had sort of behind the scenes (e.g. Rei, Makoto, and Mamoru's backstory) and more believability to the villains who were just like “I hate youuuu Sailor Moon!” with only shallow explanations as to why - it was easier for me to make some psychological assumptions about how the explanation really did create such hate and quest for vengeance.

I’ve enjoyed all the media Utena was produced as in different ways (except the musical which I didn't know existed until reading this thread!). I first watched the anime (and movie) with some friends who had already seen it a few times so I was lucky they could explain some of the confusing parts as we were watching (though not all of them!). Definitely silly and also supremely messed up XD.

I just read the manga in the last year and would totally recommend it as the gateway medium. I feel like it had the best ending. (Although who doesn't love the Utena-bike from the movie right? XD) It also did a great job of developing the main characters considering it was fairly short. The manga is also where the curry incident filler ep came from!

After so many years and finally reading the manga, it'd be nice to rewatch the anime again… Screen time is just not my friend right now OTL.

Sailor Zelda, did you end up watching the whole thing?? I hope you're not scarred >.>...

I have never cried over a fictional story more than Utena. The symbolism makes the show really touching and it's simply a work of art. I almost enjoyed Adolescence of Utena even more for the reason that the movie was made up of entirely symbolism (and it has a better ending). If allegories and those kinds of things aren't your cup of tea, then I definitely do not recommend this.

If anyone is confused about some of the symbolism in Utena, go check out ladyloveandjustice on tumblr and search "utena episode review" because she did a good job of explaining it.
