PostSubject: CLAMP   15th March 2012, 12:39 pm

With the huge popularity of CLAMP, at least one moment of our lives we have come acrossed an anime based off of CLAMP's works, a manga by CLAMP, or even artwork that was created by CLAMP. With the level of creativity of and the ability to be unique with not just their stories but their artstyle is simply amazing to me.

While I am more of an Old Style CLAMP Fan, I still enjoy the New Style CLAMP even though in my opinion, it is not as nearly detailed as it once was (from what I read, Mokona Appa had to have surgery because of arthritys and thus they had to create a new style that would define them).

These four ladies have such a involvement in their works from when it goes from manga to anime, it's really an interesting read. In fact, when Mad House was working on creating Cardcaptor Sakura, majority of the outfits Sakura was in because of Tomoyo were designed by Mokona herself (this was mentioned in the first book of Clamp no Kiseki).

I first became aware of CLAMP not because of their manga though, but because of their movie X/1999 (long before the series). I was in awe of how beautiful the style was and decided to learn more about the people who created that story. The first manga I read by CLAMP was Magic Knight Rayearth.

Some of my favorites from CLAMP include:

Magic Knight Rayearth
X/1999
Tokyo Babylon
Shirahime-Syo
Miyuki-chan in Wonderland
Cardcaptor Sakura
Chobits
Angelic Layer
Clover
Wish
Kobato
XXXHolic (my personal favorite of their new style)
Legal Drug

While I do have my dislikes (i.e.: Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles, RG Vega), to me there's just something about their art and their stories that always seem to captivate me. right now though, I would have to say that my top favorite Old Style CLAMP is Tokyo Babylon and the top favorite New Style Clamp is XXXHolic.

So how about everyone else? How did you come across CLAMP? Are you a fan of the old or new style or even both? Which ones are your favorite and which ones are your dislikes? Let's spread the CLAMP love ^^

Let's see, the first thing I ever saw of CLAMP was a picture of Chii from Chobits, but the actual thing I saw from them was reading XxXHolic back when I was around 11-13, I can't remember exactly. I really liked it back then, but after looking back it, I am not a big fan of it. I am definitely a fan of their old style, their new style just cuts out all of the beautiful detail their old style used to have. My favorite work of theirs is a tie between Rayearth and CardCaptor Sakura, and I'm not what my least favorite is.

PostSubject: Re: CLAMP   18th March 2012, 4:07 pm

I was introduced to CLAMP through a few series actually. Probably my first exposure was seeing some Magic Knight Rayearth, then seeing Card Captor Sakura (dubbed) on TV. I got REALLY huge into CLAMP after I discovered Chobits. I've read and watched a lot of their works.

I'm working on finally buying the Card Captor Sakura manga now that its coming out in Omnibus form. I have the original right to left prints of Magic Knight Rayearth (and not all the volumes at that) and seriously need to finish getting all of the series.

I also never finished collecting all of the Angelic Layer manga nor did I watch the anime. While its not my favorite of theirs, it was very cute and I liked the tie in with Chobits, it being a prequel of sorts.

I'm a little behind on their newer works. Never got into xxxHolic and I was collecting the Tsubasa Chronicle manga. I rather enjoyed the manga. The first season of the anime was all right. Then i just kinda stopped. :/

I think once I get all of my SM manga, i'm going to go on a CLAMP journey and finally finish my collections of those.

But CLAMP is right up there in top artistic influences. They rank next to Naoko. I love them and their story telling so much.

Cardcaptor Sakura was my first Clamp series. I haven't read the Chobits manga, but I have seen most of the anime. I need to read the manga. I also tried reading their Tsubasa and I couldn't get into it! To me it was like one big fanficiton crossover. I really don't view it as a canon in the CCS series. I have read spoilers that says it can be, but I refuse to accept it. I also tried reading XXXHolic and I couldn't get into it either.

CLAMP is my one true love. They introduced me to a whole new genre of art and storytelling that had a very deep impact on me. I think the mood and ambience of their art still stays very strongly with me even today and is very much apart of who I am.

I was introduced to clamp through their darker, old school manga, x/1999. My goodness, I cannot even express how much I love that manga. Depresses me that they never finished it. I also read Tokyo Babylon, although their drawing style was a little too old for me to fully enjoy it. My favorites though, next to x/1999, are Gohou Drug, Clover (the most beautiful manga), Wish and Suki. As you may have noticed, I really like their quiet odd storytelling with that unique voice in their work. I know it's a huge contrast to the twisted violence of x/1999 but Clover is just so beautiful to me.

I also like CCS, of course. And I read Angelic Layer, although I am not so much a fan of fighting games, so it did not do too much for me. Chobits was alright. Sadly, I was not able to get into their newer works. I started watching the anime of xxxHolic but then school came and devoured my life. And although I started reading Tsubasa, I am so glad that I fell out of it when I did. Dear god, that ending would have drove me mad if I had invested my life into the entire series. O.o

Clover = the most beautiful storytelling ever. I really REALLY need to own that manga. I never did buy it. Sad Sad

And yay! Someone mentioned Wish! I need to reread that one. It's been a while. But i remember enjoying it a lot and the themes they covered with it. Very Happy

It's been a long while since I've read it. I know it has to do with Angels and love and falling in love with a human? something like that. lol

Yeah, and the angels were kind of asexual as in like you weren't sure if they were a male or female, but that didn't matter. I think.

I could look it up to but... *looks at Yami's reason above* XD

Ooh, I will tell you about it! It's about an angel named Kohaku, who needs to find a human to grant them a wish. However, the human that he finds is a rather stoic yet kind-hearted man named Shuichiro, who saves Kohaku from a crow. Kohaku decides to stay with Shuichiro to help him around the house until the man can give Kohaku his wish.

During this four-volume manga, Kokuyo, the son of Satan and Hisui, one of the four Angel Masters fall in love and live on Earth as they have been cast out of Heaven and Hell. The two of them, along with Kokuyo's cousin Koryuu (who loves to tease and bully Kohaku) end up living with Shuichiro. The story further develops and eventually alerts the reader of a slightly more sinister plot than what originally seems at first glance, one that involves the emotional relationship between Shuichiro and Kohaku.

It is a very sweet and adorable manga with a bit of naughtiness (that is not graphic). The American version makes Kohaku and Hisui females, which turns the manga into a lovely shoujo. However, in the original japanese, everyone is a male, which means that this is actually a shounen-ai manga. Needless to say, Kohaku and Hisui have feminine features and can be passed off as females.

Here are some pics!

The demon Koryuu and his two servants in their chibi form along with the angel Kohaku, also in his chibi form.

Kohaku and Shuichiro

My favorites! Kokuyo and Hisui

Sorry for double posting!

B-chan, you can buy the full set of Clover as one book. They combined all four volumes. I personally do not like that but still, if you want to buy it.

I am not sure that I ever bought all of Wish, which is rather depressing. I remember reading it from the library often but now I need to go check my bins to see if I have it. :/ I am sure that it would be so expensive now if I tried to buy it.

Oh, and the lovely CLAMP as I have always known them. ^^ Are they not adorable?

Yep! Typical early U.S. publishing. They often switched genders, just like in Sailor Moon, to make a series more "acceptable." -_-

I loved the series, although I will confess that I have never liked any of CLAMP's endings, and Wish is no exception. I'm not sure why CLAMP always fails in those final chapters, especially when they create such epic and enthralling work. The ending to Wish is not bad -- and they finish the series, thank goodness. It just was not my favorite.

But I definitely encourage you to read it! Very Happy

XD Seeing that they rarely finish their series, I can understand why you may have not read too many endings. Hee. Hm, I did not like the manga ending of CSS too much, but it was still fine. I just do not like that whole "fast forward to the future" kind of ending. :/ It feels vague and always a little bittersweet to me. Clover was so vague and saddened me, although since the books were out of order to begin with, it did not bother me too much. I did not like Tsubasa though. At all.

Anjyu! Another Clover fan though, yay! Who are your favorite characters and pairings?

My first CLAMP series I was introduced to was CCS, when I was 9? The first one I took an active interest in though was MKR, which I stumbled upon at the library when I was 10. Fast forward a few years, and a few growth spurts, and I'm buying volume one of RG Veda at the age of 14. After falling in love with RG Veda, I looked into this "CLAMP" person, only to find that they had written two series I had previously been exposed to.
I now own the entirely of RG Veda and MKRI. I own most of xxxHolic and Tsubasa as well.
I've read all of X, Tokyo Babylon, RG Veda, MKRI&II, CCS, xxxHolic, Tsubasa, Wish, Gate 7 (or what there is so far), and their collection of stories about winter I can't remember the name of.
I think I might have an unhealthy love for them.

And Yami-chan, I'm not sure why they never finish! But they are notorious for doing so. X/1999 and Gohou Drug were my favorites that they just abandoned. :/

Their winter book was so depressing. Not bitter-sweet like many of their death-heavy series. Just. Depressing.

I thought I heard rumours of Legal Drug being picked back up?
And technically X is on hiatus, as is Clover I believe.

They take on so many series at once and extend them for so long. It is possible that they run out of steam, lose interest or run out of ideas? It's just, X/1999 was EPIC. I think there were 18 volumes out? How do you NOT finish something like that? Gohou Drug only had three but they left off right when they put in a major plot twist. Everything was very allusive and then they get to the final chapter of volume three and surprise us and then just never return it.

Joe - I head that X was on a hiatus as well. It's been 11 years I think? That is a very long hiatus. And to be honest, I am worried that if they continued it they would draw it like Tsubasa. Not that that is a bad thing, but X was beautiful drawn in such a violent and powerful way. It just would not have the same impact if executed in their new style.

Legal Drug is a strange one. I heard that they started it up again and released three chapters but then I heard that those three chapters encompass a completely new story-line. I need to see because the info has been quite scattered.

But back to X and their beautifully unique artistic sensibility, just look at these images.

Well I think that X was drawn by a different member of the team than xxxHolic and Tsubasa. I think Mokona drew the former, while Nekoi and Igurashi drew the latter. So that partially accounts for changes in style.

And according to wiki, X should be 21 volumes upon completion. And Legal drug is officially complete, with Drug and Drop being a reboot or something.

Yah, CSS was created during the same time as X. With each manga, a different member of the team would take charge in the drawing, as Joe said. I cannot remember her name, but one particular member of the team was the main artist for Wish, Clover and Suki (and Gohou Drug as well, I believe), which is why those stories are so different from the rest. The lines tend to be simple and clean, with quiet characters, beautifully spacious compositions and softer story lines. I love them so much.

Yeah, usually one member will be in charge of the story, one will be in charge of character designs, and the other two will act as editors and do backgrounds. (although with xxxHolic I guess they had two people on characters; one for males and one for females.)
