Almost done watching Revolutionary Girl Utena (!!!!!!!) and rewatching Sailor Stars.
Currently reading Ouran High School Host Club because the anime only covered like 1/4 of the story.

Well, Sailor Moon as always, and um, Neon Genesis Evangelion. (The user known as Evangelion on GC may or may not have spurred me to do this.) Watching the dub, and it's pretty good really, when compared with it's contemporaries in the US.

Anime:
Just finished "The Devil is a Part-Timer" which was hilarious so I've now joined the chorus of people that are annoyed that this hasn't gotten a season 2 despite being very successful and having plenty more material to pull from (around a dozen LNs)...  But rumor is that the (stupid) author just wanted the extra attention for their light novels with the first season  and so hasn't considered further adapting the series to anime form.  Grrrr....not cool.

Just started "Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne" which is a magical girl anime from 1999 which I had never heard of before (probably since it was never dubbed or officially gotten a sub release...just fansubs at kiss.) but definitely has some similarities to early Sailor Moon both in tone/theme and in some of the characters and their relationships with each other at least in the early episodes.  So obviously liking it so far.

THE DEVIL WORKS PART-TIME IS HYSTERICAL. If you ever need a good laugh, I totally recommend this.

Just finished reading Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Wraith Arc. Fair warning, it's a tear jerker. Some people felt it was irrelevant to the story but trust me, it isn't.

I binge-read half of Kuragehime in one night but I seriously need to slow down because it's still ongoing and I can't handle cliffhangers lol

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne
Just finished it (44 episodes total)

So plot summary.  The show is about a girl named Maron who is the re-incarnation of Joan of Arc.  As such she has the power to turn into a magical girl known as Kaitou Jeanne (with the assistance of her comic relief sidekick a tiny angel only she can see).  As Jeanne she goes around stealing valuable objects from people, although the reason she does this is because these objects are being possessed by demons turning their owners (or whomever is most attached to them) into a cruel possessed person.  When she exorcises the demon by throwing a magical chess piece pin at it (why chess...no idea it's never explained) the object it's attached to disappears as well.  So having done this a bunch of times she's attracted the attention of the police who have a special task force dedicated to catching her.  It's lead by her best friends father, and her best friend (very much an anime Rei-Usagi type relationship between Maron/Miyako) who has designs on following in her fathers footsteps is also determined to catch Jeanne devising elaborate traps to snare her.  For some inexplicable reason Jeanne leaves notes announcing her crimes ahead of time to the owner of the object (no decent explanation is ever really given for why besides plot)...thus allowing the police to create elaborate set-ups each time throughout most of the first half of the series these serve as the main action of the series.  It's actually somewhat neat in that this often means she has to actually use as much her brain as her powers to get out of situations outsmarting the police.  The demons themselves mostly just sit in the object and don't do much else though occasionally the possessed person will also try to attack Jeanne in some manor.  Things get more interesting once Kaitou Sinbad shows up.  He's a rival thief doing the same thing as Jeanne competing for the same items who may or may not be working for the devil despite the fact that he helps her out on occasion.  There's very much an early S1 Mamoru/Usagi relationship between their alter egos although Chiaki actually certainly seems to be a bit more of an actual douche than Mamoru at first making some rather perverted comments to get under her skin.  The blossoming of their relationship is also very well handled and much more gradual rather than the more destiny light-switch that SM90s had.

I will say that like SM90s it suffers heavy "monster of the week" filler syndrome in the middle of the season, still again like SM90s for me there was enough strong character moments/development that I didn't mind it too much.  I think this show does an excellent job on fully fleshing out and developing the core characters throughout the series.

Around episode 28-29 I think it really hits its stride as the plot takes a turn with her completing her original mission.  They addressed one of my earlier annoyances here as she started having to actually fight the demons themselves instead of as much focus being on the heist and evading the police.
We also at this point get the appearance of recurring villains directly messing with her and start getting big payoffs on long standing plot threads such as about Maron's parents.  There's also at least one nice size plot twist that I wish I hadn't been spoiled on going in..although the article that spoiled it was where I learned about the existence of this series to begin with so oh well.

I can however see why this show never went international.  Towards the end it gets much heavier on religious imagery than would likely be allowed on a North American kids show.  Once they really dive into the full Joan of Arc/God/Devil mythology there was no way you could just dub over it like the "Messiah" talk and other religious imagery/talk of Sailor Moon S.  There are also a couple really serious subplots about things like divorce and terminal illness, as well as possessed people slapping kids around which again may not have been appealing for an NA kids show to deal with.  Which is a shame because otherwise I think this show was good enough it really could have become an decent international hit.  Overall though I'd highly recommend it to Sailor Moon 90s fans as it has a perfect balance of action, comedy, romance and episodes with major feels without excessive violence, fanservice (not a single character with a blatantly oversized rack in the series that I can recall), or being overly Chibi that many of today's magical girls anime seems to feel the need to resort to in order to get attention.

Yumeria
Still on a magical girl anime kick I just started this series from 2004.  First of all that theme song makes me want to jam a pencil in my ears.  Also can you get dumber than each of the girls shaking their hand in the air for the first half of the stupid awful j-pop song.  So I will certainly be skipping that from now on.  Maybe it was an mistake to go dub on this one as I'm also not all loving the voice acting.  That very rarely bothers me but dang it these people don't make it sound like they are the characters actually talking which is making it hard not to be distracted.  I may be in the minority in that I almost always prefer dubs so I don't have to focus so much with the reading and can do other things when I want.  But in order to get through all 12 (I almost never quit a series without finishing) I may have to try switching back to the Sub.  But that means paying more attention and so far two episodes in I am fairly bored.  The previously mentioned annoying excessive fanservice is also very present.  I mean the ending for the first episode is literally zoomed in on the main character having his hand on the breasts of two girls.  The next episode opens with him squeezing like a pervert.  All the more gross since the one girl looks to be about ten. *sigh*  At least I don't hate the ending theme.  Hopefully this will get better by the end as first impressions are not good.

Yumeria - Finished (12 episodes)

The various DVD covers are a bit misleading as despite showing only the five girls it's actually more of a harem anime than a magical girl one. The main character is a 16 year old pervert named Tomakazu who on his 16th birthday goes to bed and wakes up in a strange dream world where a girl Mone (*Pronounced Moan-A...so perverted jokes could be made about moaning* who is really more of a pokemon in human form as she can only say her name.  And say it she does...over and over and over again.  She never SHUTS UP in the first couple episodes.) fighting something that looks like it is straight out of a 3D Space Invaders game.  When he wakes up the 12 year old girl comes with him of course naked in his bed because this is one of those anime that is all about perverted fanservice (Although no actual nudity is shown unless you count the transformation sequences which like Sailor Moon had them naked but without detailed nipples or nether-regions just butts).  Over the next while one by one people he encounter in the real world end up pulled into this dream world...and then in his bed.  There is Mizuki the quiet girl next door who obviously has a crush on him she is too shy to act on. Pretty much of the same blatant stereotype as Hinata from Naruto. Her dub voice even always speaks in the same whispered way for the first episodes.  Nenekko the wannabe cat girl (probably also around 12) who talks in the third person, constantly repeats the same phrases, and is overall annoying as heck most of the time.  Kuyo the younger sister of his guardian (because of course he was orphaned at a young age because ANIME) whom he grew up with like family.  Finally he also encounters an "mysterious" older woman in the dream world who calls herself Silk...but SPOILER ALERT is actually said guardian Nanase who due to being really the only other major female character in the series it is blatantly obvious of her identity immediately despite the show trying to make it a "mystery" to the audience until around episode 6.  Nanase is only a couple years older than Tomo and it's never explained how exactly she became his legal guardian when they were all just kids when they weren't related...  Since this is a harem anime of course all of these characters have feelings for Tomo including his guardian and almost sister.  Ugh.

Anyways in the dream world the girls gain the magical powers (actually more like slutty iron man armor that lets them use mostly elemental based attacks) to fight by him touching them...of course the first few times are in a perverse way but thankful as the series goes on this is at least toned down to touching a shoulder or hug.  Over time we get the mythology of what they are fighting, and a whole big destiny thing comes into play complete with a time traveler through "reverse re-incarnation" that inhabits Nenekko's body half the time...and no it doesn't make much sense.  That's basically it they need to destroy these Space Invader things before they can escape into the real world and obliterate it and each time they encounter them they are stronger than the last time.  Although far more time is spent in the real world on completely unrelated plots that are a mix of the characters bonding and acting completely stupid (There's also an obnoxious Lolita chasing teacher that repeatedly pops up here).  The show also chooses to get far more convoluted by introducing a shadow organization in the real world near the end of the series which just made me shake my head at how nonsensical everything involving it was.

It took until the 3rd episode for any of the characters to start to show any depth beyond being shallow stereotypes.  Unfortunately those nice moments are buried among a ton of crap.  Honestly after finishing it I almost can't help but feel like somewhere in here could have been an decent anime.  I mean the basic premise is actually solid enough, and over time most of the characters become likable (although the kids are still ear-bleedingly annoying most of the time...you can at least see why the other characters would care about them though), some of the action scenes showed promise, and it looks pretty nice art-wise most of the time...but the execution.  Ugh.  All of the above is just overshadowed with an absurd amount of ecchi, random insanity that is supposed to pass for humor (always with the same background music. I could honestly tell when a scene was about to be mind-numbingly inane just by hearing the first two notes of BG music), plot inconsistencies, and a story that repeatedly veers sharply into the what the fudge that does not make any sense territory in the last half of the season...  So I would say this is not one that most people should want to bother watching.

I do have to give the show credit for one thing though.  It is one of the extremely rare harem anime where the male character actually chooses one of the girls in the end.  I mean sure technically two of them were kids and two of them were sorta his family growing up although not blood related but still...I have to give Yumeria it's due for such an very rare occurrence.
----------

Maria the Virgin Witch - Finished (12 episodes)

Stumbled upon this one thanks to a YouTube video claiming that it has the most accurate portrayal of medieval combat ever shown in a non-documentary media...  Otherwise I'm not sure I would have considered going near it with such a title.  I mean it sounds like some kind of over the top fanservice garbage.  That is very much not the case...

Whew...where to start.  As shallow as Yumeria was Maria was deep and compelling.  The premise is simple Maria is a very powerful witch who lives in France and she despises death.  As such she has made it her mission to stop it whenever she can.  Unfortunately for her the 100 Year War is currently going on between England and France.  At first she doesn't interfere beyond using her Succubus (an female owl she turned into her human companion) to tire out the men... (And when she finds a couple generals that swing the other way she turns a male owl into an Incubus...except as a virgin she's never seen and is embarrassed by the equipment so she skips that important part!).  But then she is visited by a young girl who is the granddaughter of a former friend.  The girl's father is being forced to serve in a combat force and she begs Maria to watch over him.  On top of that a young messenger Joseph whom Maria is fond of is also being forced to fight.  As such she decides to take more drastic action...  Such action gets the attention of the Archangel Michael whom is displeased with her disrupting the natural order of things.  He almost kills her until the messenger interrupts prompting God (unheard by us) to tell Michael to grant her mercy this once.  Instead Michael puts a two part curse on her the first part is that if she loses her purity she will lose her magic.  The second part is that if he catches her using her magic again in front of the masses she will be smited.  To that end he summons the angel Ezekiel to stay with her making sure she doesn't pull anything.  So the first part is her indeed trying to find ways to not let Ezekiel see her interfering because of her beliefs she refuses to back down.

Only like I said this show gets pretty deep in examining the consequences or war and in stopping a war.  We get to see all sides of the issue in addition to Maria we see the glimpses into lives of soldiers, mercenaries (the rise/fall of one in particular that is a friend to Joseph is a major plot arc throughout), other witches, and leaders of the Church as they all deal with the consequences of her actions.  In the second half of the series the discussion turns heavily to one of religion and faith.  Maria is a witch and a heretic.  It's not that she doesn't believe in God (after all in this universe there are obviously angels/archangels as proof) but she doesn't approve of his ways.  No matter what she refuses to back down from her own beliefs which leads her into conflict with the Church causing the local leadership to resort to some less than scrupulous tactics to try to deal with her.  While she seeks out her own answers trying to figure out just what is right when it comes to achieving peace and causing those around her to also ask similar question including Joseph, an English witch named Viv, and eventually even Ezekiel. (who starts out mostly as comic relief but morphs into something more).

Content wise this is a very mature series.  There's not really what I would consider blatant fanservice.  There is no actual shown nudity, but Maria sleeps tastefully naked with arms covering those areas.  There is also a good bit of talk and jokes regarding sex particularly in the first few episodes.  This material mostly fades away later in the series as things take a more serious tone around the middle of the series.  There is however a near rape in one the villages and yeah an inevitable plot to try to rape Maria once certain others learn of her curse (things don't get too graphic).  There is some blood shown after all this is war, although the show does an incredible job to not be too graphic trying to minimize just how much we see even as limbs are lost.  (What's interesting again is that this anime has actually been described as having one of the most accurate depictions of warfare during the 100 year war ever shown outside of a documentary...I assume excluding the part where the witch summons the giant monsters to chase everyone.)

Anyways I mostly found this to be an very entertaining series.  The first couple episodes pulled me in quickly.  (LOVE the upbeat catchy theme song "Philosophy of Dear World"). The moral/philosophical debate that it raised seemed rather fascinating. However I did start to get bored with it around episode 8-9 as for me things maybe went just a little too deep and controversial in the religious debate end.  However the action picked up again after that to where I enjoyed the last few episodes and the ending which did an good enough job of bringing some closure to such a delicate story.

Would highly recommend it to anyone not offended by this type of content.
------

Currently in the middle of Kaze no Stigma (decent start but losing a little interest in the middle though),  and Charlotte (so far so good).
