So I'm pretty sure in both anime and manga world we have come across weird fan translations. As in things that annoys us while reading/watching a fan translation. Here is a place where we can discuss things that annoys you and weird translations (ex: bootlegs).

My biggest petpeeve is the use of Japanese words instead of just using the English meaning:

So this fantranslation group use the word kawaii instead of saying cute. In a few chapters back they used the word cute. Why switch to kawaii? I feel like it's unnecessary maybe they thought kawaii fit better here? Not sure.

Now I can understand keeping Japanese that don't really translate well into English or cultural things like food and clothes. Also catchpharses at then end of sentences.

Maybe its the way that Chii says it? And how many syllables it is? It'd be nice to have a raw comparison for those that know Japanese on here so they could explain it to us. XD

Yes that would be nice. As I continued reading they went back to saying cute in English. They also used the spelling of thank you in Japanese, but only did it once. Ugh it annoys me so much. lol

Haha that's how I view it too. I guess maybe it is how Chi pronounced it, but still. It's on paper. It's not the anime. :/ I guess I just don't understand this sorta thing.

Mars, you worked on translationing the Sailor Moon manga and the Sailor V manga. Do you know why this group would do such a thing?

Because they're trying to make weeaboos happy and/or they are weeaboos who think using random Japanese phrases is the hippest thing ever.

I really don't know. =\

What's sad is that this stuff is going into professional manga translations too, which is a total bummer. Quality is going right down the drain.

Yes indeed it is the hippest thing ever. I guess pleasing weeaboos will be the only reason. I've seen this in fansubs of anime as well. At least professional subs don't do this. At least I don't think they do. O.o

I guess my pet peeve when it comes to translations (official and fan), is the inconsistency of the honorifics. There's one point where in the manga they say for example "Haruna-san" and then there's areas in the same manga and volume ""Mrs. Haruna".

The reason why I pick on honorifics is because that is the "eyesore" between English and Japanese in my opinion. I don't mind the use of it, but I believe in consistency. I believe it should be one or the other; not a mixture of both.

I know its nearly impossible to properly translate colloquial speech from japanese to english even if you adapt rather than translate, but I really really hate it, based on what little manga I have read Razz (I've read 2... including sailor moon >.> but not including horror manga one shots by junji ito), when attempts are made to slangify speech often using outdated Americanisms and weird almost embarrassing to look at dialogue.

I don't mind it when its only one phrase that's used repeatedly like in the new sailor moon when they used 'bro' (although admittedly, in New Zealand culture the word 'bro' has a different connotation and usage to the USA), but when its a whole dialogue filled with what should be funny slang things in Japanese, it gets turned into an painful reading experience.

I'd actually rather have it awkward and filled with Japanese words with captions for explanation, because at least then I know what's going on >.> and maybe even learn a bit about Japanese culture. The two languages are just too different to compatibly adapt slang conversation without a very off-colour feel to it.

I think the main problem with the slang issue is that Japanese slang hasn't really changed a whole heck of a lot since the 1980s. Whereas in America, the slang words change all the time.

For example, ten years ago one might have translated "saikou da!" as "pwnage!" or "awesome!" - nowadays that might be translated as "epic!" if you were going for a slang meaning.

It's really hard to deal with and I think translators try to do the best they can for the time period they are translating in. The trouble comes when you look back at something that was translated decades ago and have a hard time understanding the context and old slang. Or if you live in a country that doesn't utilize American slang, period, like you had mentioned Sashminda.

I think that all good translations should definitely include translator's notes. It's a great way to learn about Japanese culture and language, and usually they are critical to understanding Japanese literature, manga or otherwise.

I just wish that current industry manga translators would take their work a little more seriously and do a better job. If they put in a little more effort, they could truly spark an interest in Japanese language and culture that could inspire a whole new generation of people to become active in learning the language.

I definitely agree, if manga translators did do better to try and de-awkwardify XD dialogue, it wold be so much better to read.

I think perhaps my viewpoint is skewed as the manga I've read was sailor moon and that really old one called ranma 1/2, which obviously would have used slang americanisms from the 1990s.

And I guess there really isn't a perfect way to translate in order to make it understandable to the whole Anglosphere! The whole world is so disconnected T_T

I do love my captions though. >.> so shiny. shiny and italicised Very Happy

I'm reading Fullmetal Alchemist right now, and there are moments when it's worded in a very strange way. Like they made a very literal translation. Also, they don't translate the sound effects sometimes. It can be very annoying. I think the best translation I've ever seen though is Miss Dream's scans (Hi Elly!).
