Ok, so Fullmetal Alchemist, or FMA, is a manga series that also has two animes, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Basically FMA is about 2 alchemist brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric. They live in a fictional version of Europe, and alchemy is the most advanced form of science. In an attempt to bring their mother back to life, Ed and Al break the rule of equivalent exchange, which states that, "Human-kind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost." This causes the transmutation to fail, and Alphonse loses his body and Edward loses a leg. He sacrifices his arm to save Al's life and Al's soul now inhabited a empty suit of armor. Ed and Al's childhood friend, Winry, makes automail limbs for Edward.
To restore their bodies, they decide to become "dogs of the military" and become state alchemists. Alphonse cannot become one, as he is not a person. But Ed does because he can somehow transmutate without a transmutation circle. They figure out that they have to find the Philosipher's Stone. That's how their journey starts.
So yeah, FMA is pretty cool.

Edward Elric approves of this thread.

I ADORE this series, and it's my absolute favorite anime/manga (along side Sailor Moon). I just love the characters and the writing. Hiromu Arakawa is such a great writer.

I saw the first anime back in 2006, I flew through all 52 episodes in such a short time. I later went and read the manga and found myself liking it more than the anime, so you can imagine my excitement when FMA: Brotherhood was announced. The fandom was pretty heated when it was first announced though, fans of the first anime where not happy with news of a "reboot", saying it was gonna suck (Vic Mignogna as well), and fans of the manga (myself included) had to keep telling everyone to just "shut up and watch, it WILL be different, and it WILL be great". Now the fandom is still debating but for different reasons: over which version is superior. Lol!

Anyways, while the first anime does have its charm, it does have some head scratching moments, but I still enjoy it overal. Brotherhood I enjoyed more, because its closer to the manga, but at the same time I think reading the manga in advance kinda ruined it for me in some ways (example, they cut the Ishbal flashback short in the anime, which bugged me). Ah well, it was still awesome seeing the later content of the manga fully animated.

....and i'll admit, Ed is the only fictional character i've ever had a crush on.

I'm a fan! I love the manga the most, but I adore both anime's! Although admittedly I do like Brotherhood the best but it's the same for me with the new Sailor Moon anime. MORE TO LOVE!

Al, because he's so sweet! I wish he was my brother…
I love Winry, she's hilarious in the anime
Hughes was awesome and he was a great father.
Hawkeye is a BAMF; her and Mustang would make an awesome couple
Armstrong and all his sparkles…

And Ed, he's like my guy alter ego. He's short like me and he has freaking magical powers! What's not to like?

HUGHES T^T NOOOOOO! I LOVES HIM! It makesame so sad!  WHYYYY!

I love Armstrong haha, I don't like Muscley guys(Which is funny considering I love DBZ...) but he is just too awesome.

Ed's like the whole package while still avoiding that Gary-Stu persona because of his shortness and attitude lmfao! Strong, kick-arse, and incredibly smart!

I love Alchemy... if only it existed... you know, without all the draw backs that is haha c:

I like Winry's granny a lot Very Happy and you're right Hawkeye is amazing!

Roy is just... so awesome. His character growth throughout the whole thing just keeps getting better!

This series makes me laugh, makes me cry and makes me want to break things lol >.>

Oh, I love this series! The characters are just so wonderful, especially the female characters. But they're all just fantastic! I relate myself and my brother a lot to Ed and Al. I'm the short tempered short kid while he's the calmer, bigger, younger one. But I've always felt super protective of my younger brother. I really love Winry and I'm working on a cosplay of her. Also, I am enamored with Hawkeye and Mustang and I LOVED General Armstrong! She was such a BAMF.

I've already seen the original but this is my first time with brotherhood. I'm happy the voices are the same, and it's so awesome to see how much the voice acting has improved, I've always loved their voices though^^ perfect fits to me.

It's such a moving manga. There was a topic in the mangafox forums about the morals of bringing someone back from the dead, human transmutation and trying to gain immortality to cheat death.

I love this series so much because the characters are so lively. The humor is a constant, but the deeper aspect of the story is just so suspenseful, dramatic, adventurous. A true test of courage, faith and strength. Over coming the impossible, lessons learned and SAGAFHSFH I just love this series so much @_@

YAY THIS THREAD HOW HAVE I NOT SEEN IT UNTIL NOW.

I remember watching Fullmetal Alchemist back when you could only get it fansubbed! That was so long ago. I looove the first anime. Unfortunately i never got to read all the manga (i started buying it, but had to stop cause poor). Anyway, I started Brotherhood, but we've (me and the boi) have been watchign so many other things its on the backburner.

I really like the animation of the new anime, it looks so awesome. I'm glad it got a reboot and I can't wait to read through it, especially since I know the Brotherhood is closer to the manga.

I'm also glad Brotherhood got put back on netflix, for a while it wasn't up there. D:

FMA is just so moving. It gives you all the feels!
The manga is absolutely amazing and it is so beautiful and epic.
And the dub is actually one of the best dubs I've seen. The only reason I watched Ouran Host Club is because Ed's voice actor was on there, lol!
Question: Who do you guys ship?

AH HA!

I am glad I found this thread! Why I haven't I posted here!? I am a huge FMA FAN!!

I got into FMA late in the game. I remember catching it once adult swim in high school. Well I only saw the opening and it scared me. Yeah the opening freaked me out for some reason. Then in my senior year of high school I went to my first anime con with some friends. Vic was there and my friends were huge fans of his and FMA. So I went to most of his panels. He showed a FMA video to us and I thought why not? So I gave it a try and watched the anime and I was hook. About the the time I was finishing the anime Brotherhood was coming out. I believe two or six episodes have aired in Japan and funanimation was posting their subs on their youtube channel. So I liked marathon the original series and watched the original movie. Then I dove into Brotherhood and read the manga. The manga came to an end in my freshmen year of college. I was so sad when it was over.

So which version do I like better?

Brotherhood and the manga!! I usually hate carbon copy animes, but I was okay with Brotherhood being more faithful. The author wrote her characters very well and gave time for the plot to develop. Her story translates really well in anime format so it doesn't really need filler. Although I wished brotherhood didn't skip the mine chapters and had a little bit of filler.

Favorite characters:
Roy
Riza
Ed
Al
Winry
Ling
Both Armstrongs
Huges
Greed

I ship RoyxRiza and EdxWinry. Greed and Ling because why not!

I wanted to bump this because I've been rewatching FMA Brotherhood and I love this show.  I love both the original FMA and Brotherhood to death.  The original FMA anime was really big when I was just finishing up high school but I didn't get into it until sometime after it had already finished airing.  The first time I watched it it was on Adult Swim and it was one of the filler in episodes at the beginning and I actually wasn't that impressed with it the first time I saw it.  Sometime later I watched it from the very beginning and was instantly wowed by it this time and it quickly became one of my top favorites.  I later saw the movie and read some of the manga which I still need to finish sometime.  For years I had always wanted there to be a reboot that followed the manga more accurately as I loved the manga so much more than the original anime and I was really excited when Brotherhood happened.  Brotherhood more than exceeded my expectations and I loved how accurate they followed the manga while still keeping a lot of the emotional spirit that made the original such a classic and I love all the manga only characters like Ling and May Chan.  Brotherhood is also very action packed and does a good job of keeping you on the edge of the seat and the animation is gorgeous and well done.  Why couldn't we have gotten a reboot like this for Sailor Moon?
