Oh ... This is a tough one.

I haven't seen all of Kiki's Delivery Service, but I did like the first half hour.

The tie between my favorites, though, are:
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away

I've also seen part of Mononoke Hime, and the first half of the movie was absolutely fantastic. ^^

Hum. Princess Mononoke was the one I fell for. Also adore My Neighbour Totoro!

And I had a period of extreme insomnia years back where the only thing i could watch that would relax me a bit was spirited away - the plot is kind of thin compared to some of the others but it's so gorgeous. Total security blanket.

I'm a big fan of Howl's Moving Castle because it introduced me to a very amazing author, Diana Wynn Jones. I read the novel the movie was based off of (which, of course, is WAY better than the movie) and i've read tons of her other stuff now. I highly recommend her. ^^;

Anyway, back to Ghibli. I also loved Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, KiKi's Delivery Service (i think that was the first one i saw actually) and My Neighbor Totoro. I've seen Nausicaa which is good too, but i don't think i understand all the hype behind it. I think thats mostly because if its anything Miyazaki does it ends up having very similar themes and plots as far the stories go. Usually man vs. nature. Don't mess with nature. That kind of thing. Its a good movie, but themes get kind of old.

Also I thought Ponyo was an adorable kids movie and had amazing animation. Everything in that movie was 2d! I think thats one thing I love about Miyazaki films in particular is that he is fairly traditional and uses minimal 3D animation in his works.

those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. If you guys have any suggested, please send them my way. I love Ghibli films.

I've always wanted to see The Cat Returns, but i've never found it. Oh well. Maybe it'll have to be a netflix/torrent thing.

The movie The Cat Returns is a really cute movie, and certain parts are memorable, but in personal opinion it isn't quite as good as the rest of them. Nausicaa was also pretty good, but, I've heard that it was supposed to be a novel originally, rather like Howl's Moving Castle. However, I'm not sure if the novel for Nausicaa is translated or not.

Spirited Away most definitely... Followed closely by Howl's Moving Castle. I loved the book and the movie!

Oh yeah I really enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle too! I just had to think of it as a different thing to the book. Smile (I grew up reading Diana Wynne Jones, haha. I'd heard the film was really different from the book and was prepared to dislike it intensely, but it absolutely works. It's a lovely story. Just a different one.)

You are so lucky. I so WISH I had known about Diana Wynne Jones before the movies. Really really wish I had... Her stuff is RIGHT up my alley in the type of genre and fantasy i like. I was very very saddened when I learned of her death this year. Sad

Anyways, to keep this on topic, are there any more obscure Studio Ghibli films anyone has seen that might be good to watch?

Oh, this may be my favorite thread yet! Very Happy

Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite. There is such a beauty in that film, an acceptance by the characters and I love how that eases them through the film. Sofi is such a beautiful character. I love the strong fragility of her younger self and the spunkyness of her cursed, older self. She could have spent the majority of the film moaning about her prediciment but she does not -- she accepts her situation and grows and matures. I just adore it, I adore the feeling I get when watching this movie.

And I have to admit -- I prefer the dub to the original (ye gods, yes! Shocked ). I absolutely adore Emily Mortimer, she has such a soft and tremulous voice and I think she matched Sofi so much. Jean Simmons is so amazing, she is so animated. ^^ And my goodness, Christian Bale as Howl is just bone-melting to hear. I could not believe that it was him, but yes, it was and he was just fabulous. ^^

I also like Spirited Away very much. I need to watch My neighbor Totoro already. Goodness!

I agree with you! The dub for Howl's Moving Castle was VERY good. The thing I love about Disney having a hand in Ghibli films is that they can afford GOOD voice actors. So all the dubs of them are actually really tolerable to listen to if not better than the originals!

>_< I can't believe that I agree with you. The same goes for Spirited Away. Although I will admit, I loathed the voice actor for Haku. He actually played on a WB cartoon and his voice bothered me so much. It is such torture when I watch the film because I love Yubaba's va and Chihiro but I cannot stand his. lol.

I think I'm going to have to go with Ponyo. That's hard for me to do--it feels like a betrayal to my childhood favorites. But it also feels so, so right. I love Ponyo.

I do love all the Ghibli films though. I tried to drag my husband to the Ghibli museum when we were in Japan, but he refused me. Bah.

Yeah, but we had a pretty full trip as it was, so I promised myself I'd go next time I fly over to Japan. And there will be a next time, dammit.

I like a lot of the other Ghibli films as well but these two are what I consider my "favorite"

I torrented Arrietty already. I love seeing a new interpretation of one of my childhood books, "The Borrowers"(which makes me want to reread it now), however the movie's pacing itself was rather slow. I can't imagine young children digging it that much, and seeing as that is what Disney is aiming it for...we shall see how it does. However, for an older audience who appreciates good animation and a sweet simple storyline? Definitely a yes to that.

I absolutely adore Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service. Those two are probably my favorites from Ghibli.

Believe it or not, but I didn't like Howl's Moving Castle or Ponyo. I really tried too, but they just didn't do it for me. Tales from Earthsea was okay, but it didn't make much sense.

You are correct. They did make a version of The Borrowers here in the US. It was live action. Smile

I didn't like Ponyo as much, really i enjoyed it for the animation. Everything was hand drawn, no CG work at all! I think that is why I always enjoy Miyazaki's films due to his strong stance on traditionalism. However, the story is definitely aimed at a very young audience, so that is why the story is much more simplistic and not as engaging for an older audience.

Tales of Earthsea is based off of a book series and from what i understand deviated and condensed a lot of the story and really messed up a lot of it. Howl's Moving Castle as an movie adaptation of a novel makes more sense than Tales of Earthsea. Also, apparently, the original author of Tales of Earthsea was rather disappointed in some of the decisions made in the movie, especially when it comes to them white washing the characters. I believe she had intended them to be POC if I remember from when I read up on it. Never have picked up the book series though.

That is the one thing I did like about Ponyo. The animation was just beautiful!

I haven't had the chance to pick up Tales of Earthsea myself. I was aware of the series from the Scifi version done a while ago (which was also terrible) and I hope to sometime. Did they take the second and third novels and shove them together for the Ghibli version?
