LOL! XD If I was close by I'd come by with a ton of jars to collect
those suckers. We do entomology camps for the kiddos and they
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE centipedes in their collection. xDDDD

That's awesome that you like to work with kids!! Very Happy I would've loved to have someone make bugs less shudder-y for me xD I work with kids with astronomy Smile What age range usually go to your camps?

@ Brit: XDD Yea as creepy as they are they are at least cool to look at
and learn about. n___n It can be pretty handy knowledge too! hehe

@ Alala: Thank you so much! n///n I feel really lucky I get to work with
kids, and I'm so glad others see the importance in it as well. It's
supporters that keep our programs going so we can continue to work. You
seem super charming too! ;D hehehe Hope to see you around!

@Kyralih: ;D Astronomy buff!! That's so awesome, and kind of fitting for the forum overall hehe. We usually open it from 5-14, and while the age range is large the camps go really well. The older kids are usually experienced and want the pristine intact bugs...so anything kind of beat up they give to the little ones who are just so proud when they catch something. Even little grasshoppers LOL! There is always ONE (or two) that their mom forced them to come and they hate bugs....but by the end of camp they are usually gung-ho about catching bugs and the willies are all gone. You just have to expose kids when their young to respect the little creatures and be careful with the (few) painful ones. It's harder to reverse the heebie jeebies once we are adults!

Do you take your kiddos out star watching and things?? I've always wanted to do that! I can't believe I've NEVER done that ... lol

XD Oh you are so crazy awesome. I did not expect such an indepth answer! Ok, I do not think that I will be bold enough to take a picture. lol. But I have only ever seen one kind of centipede? I think the main issue(s) are 1. I have a lot of stuff in my room (art student here) and there are a lot of places to hide and 2. There is a hole in my window? lol. Is there a specific bug spray or change in environment that I could use/do? I don't mind seeing them but just not in my BEDROOM. Mad

LOL No problem! I figure if I can help in some way then I can share what I know.

Usually when people have an indoor centipede problem.... this little guy is usually the culprit:

Centipedes that live indoors are called "house centipedes" for lack of a better term lol. Since centipede bodies don't have a way to close their spiracles/breath holes they seek out damp, cool places. Since your room probably has a lot of things on the floor like canvas's, supplies; you are recreating an enviornment they would normally seek out in the wild (primarily under large rocks, piles of wood etc). Additionally they will be a problem if the centipedes also have a suitable habitat outside your home; since you have a little hole in your window they can crawl through when the weather is unfavorable.

My advice would be to clear as much stuff as you can off of the floor. I know since you are an art student that some things don't have any place to go, but do as much as you can. Everything that shelters them is like a little condo for them to shack up in so if it's gone they won't choose that spot to relocate. If you must keep stuff stored on the floor place sticky traps in areas you find centipedes, so you can trap and kill them instead of having them roam around.

Second, I would find a way to fix that hole in your window if you can. Mechanical control is another easy fix to minimize the problem.

Lastly, I would use a residual treatment against these buggers since they do have the tendency to return during the spring season. (Spring and fall are the worst time for these buggers fyi XD) I'd suggest a product called 'Demon WP'. It's an indoor insecticide that is good for a lot of pests in the home, but what I like is that it dries fast and doesn't smell pungent. The active ingredient in this product decomposes quickly in soil/outdoors. However indoors it's effective for weeks so you can have continued protection from any new centipedes trying to come in. It's pretty cheap too! One envelope has 4 water-soluble packets and makes 2-4 gallons of solution. You apply it cracks, crevices and other hiding places, and you can even apply it outdoors as well to kill any centipedes waiting to get inside. The only thing you might need and not have is a pump sprayer. You might be able to find one cheaper though at Lowe's/Home depot where they sell pump sprayers. This would be vastly cheaper than hiring a pest control company. Especially if the suckers come back in the spring, you'll have to pay for them to come back. Smile Just a word of warning though, the active ingredient in 'Demon WP' is toxic to fish and beneficial aquatic bugs...so just to spray in areas that do not run off into ponds/lakes/rivers. I'm sure that shouldn't be a problem, but something to be aware of.

If you have any more questions though feel free to drop me a line! Sorry I can't link you to anything n.n I'm still less than a week old lol~

(BTW if that centipede doesn't match your picture, these control measures will still work except I would focus more on treating outdoors and getting rid of any piles of wood or compost. Most other species of centipedes usually stay outdoors, but if you have the perfect habitat sitting right outside your bedroom they'll pay you a visit.)

^^ yep, Sailor Moon is what got me interested in Astronomy xD

Unfortunately, not the kids we do outreach with. :/ it's usually a school thing and schools don't really care for night trips, but we do do Star Parties the first Friday of every month. We break out the telescopes and open the observatory up and the kids (and their parents!) love it. ^^

I think the time I had the most fun at a star party was when a random group of parents and their kids aged 3 - 10 came walking through (there were like 30 of them!) and we did an impromptu outreach with them. xD I had them pointing up at the stars, using my little laser, and we identified Orion and Canus Major, then Ursa Major and used the big dipper to find the north star - they loved it ^^ and they were so little! We had to go get chairs from inside to let them stand on to see through the scopes! Jupiter was out too - it was great!

And we do have a portable planetarium/Star lab, and doing that is always fun. ^^

OMFG.

I'm staying with an old friend and she showed me one of these creepy monsters today!! It had drowned itself in a cup of water she kept by the bed and had been terrorizing her for weeks because she could never catch it!

SO CREEPY!

And awesome that I found this post the day that the little fiend perished. xD

You're cool. The End.

I agree. XD and that thing is creepy. I remember when i was younger our neighborhood had a centipeed problem (maybe they were millipeeds? I don't remember), but they were tiny and black and EVERYWHERE. In the streets, in the house, in the trees...but then after that year, they were gone forever. I dunno if the neighborhood just got some kind of pest control for them or what, but it was weird and disgusting. XD

Oh. My. God.

I scrolled down the page, and then:

I may not recover.

Thank you for the tips though. I will definitely consider them. THAT IS NOT MY CENTIPEDE THOUGH.
