I had the fortunate opportunity to discover Mew Mew Tokyo - online and subbed. No cuts, edits, So it was my first exposure to it anime wise. Then I read the manga (I don't remember the manga as well though but I do remember Masaya's bits a lot). Only thing I wish was more attention to Lettuce and her own romance with the cafe owner.

I wonder how it would have been if 4Kids got the right to sell the toys. They would have had difficulties to explain the ZacrossWhip / Purple dagger.

Lettuce x Ryô is a cute pairing, but I don't like it much.

In the show they made it look like a stick. So maybe they would do the same to the toy?

I don't think bandai (or whoever distribute the toys) would agree.

I didn't even realise it was a cross when I watched the serie when I was a kid. And I've seen both seasons. (one where it's decrossed, one where it's not)

Yeah. I was first introduce to the manga and I never thought much about Zakuro's weapon.

I think they kinda rushed Zakuro's characterization in the manga... She's just.... never talking and following the moves. The only mews (who aren't Ichigo) who ever do something are Mint and Pudding! GIVE LETTUCE MORE PAGETIME! *sbaff*
(note: I still don't have the thrid omnibus)

In my opinion all the girls, but Ichigo had no real development in the manga. They were just there. It was just all about Ichigo and her feelings for Aoyama.

PostSubject: Re: Tokyo Mew Mew   17th February 2013, 10:07 am

i'm done reading the manga! (received my last omnibus very recently)
and
...
Nope.
Nope.
Nope.
I'm now defenitely sure: I like the anime better.
Mia Akumi's style is cute and totally fitting the mood of the story, but after volume 5, I feel like she completely rushed her work.
The first time Mint used Ribbon Aqua Drop was in a dramatic fashion. They HAD to stop the giant moth no matter what!
Same for Pudding, she really did this to save the people in the stadium!
Same for Zakuro, if it wasn't for her, all of tokyo would have died under that dome.
Now, Lettuce.
Seriously.
Poor Lettuce's moment wasn't as epic as it should have been.
And where the hell did her tail pop out from anyway? I though it only appeared when she had Mew Aqua? Lettuce got the short end of the stick. It's like the author just was like: "damn i must do a chapter of usefullness for the green dork too" and quickly made one. I wish it showed more how they all depended on the sea's purity, how it was really important that Lettuce found the Mew Aqua.
Now, for the final battle. i was glad when I saw that big ass Chimera with Pie and Tart, and BAM, they are defeated in two panels, just the time for the anime's Sailor Planet Attack to make a cameo. Seriously?

What I also didn't like: The girls had no transformation phrases until volume 5. Why must they make it so obvious that the anime was just released?

Now, for the final battle. It was like watching the Mistress 9 / Hotaru conflict except it's horribly rushed. Aoyama just turn off his Deep Blue switch as soon as he kills Kish and BAM, good again. Deepey come back briefly and BAM whoops I stabbed myself. Kish VS Deep Blue wasn't as epic as it was in the anime either. i seriously laughed really loudly when Kish literally said:
"Whoops. I lost."
Yeah, it was dramatic, but I'm one of those fan who don't like Kishigo, so I didn't mind much (and I knew he came back to life)

So, tl;dr: Not enough Lettuce. Zacro is still a panel-filler. Mint wasn't as present as she used to be, and Pudding is damn adorable. Deep Blue was too quickly defeated, and I wish Akumi didn't loose her time in all those useless (but cute) Petite Mew side stories and used her pages to expand the plot.

I don't regret buying them, though. This manga deserve its place as one of the most popular magical girl series. but it was too shoujo-y for me xD"

Yeah the manga is a big let down hence why I like the anime sooo much better. Everyone has bigger screen time and even Lettuce gets to shine. Zakuro is more as role model for the girls. IMO if Ichigo had to step down from being leader I see Zakuro taking the leadership role.

I liked Berry too. I feel like the fan base would have accpet her if she didn't have two animal DNA infused with her and became the leader because Ichigo was gone for a short time.

She has many faults and is not a "mary sure". God I hate it when people call canon characters mary sues. That term is for fanfic characters who are prefect.

Is A Là Mode going to be released by Kodansha? I would love to read it again!
(I have a great hatred of scans)
Also, i just learned Lettuce means "Never give up" in flower languages. This somewhat fit Mew Lettuce :'D

I really of hope they will re-release the A La Mode manga. I enjoyed it, even if it was kind of silly. (And the fact that I totally had a Rabbit-themed OC for Tokyo Mew Mew as a kid. I regret nothing.)

So I started the first episode of Mew, but I immediately turned it off at the end of the episode when I realized that its was all about saving extinct animals. Is this really the essence of the show? Because if so, I don't know if I can watch it :p

I read the first manga. It was a lil cute but geared towards a younger audience. And I think it is focusing on saving extinct animals.

It's not about that all (well kind of). That's just how they got their powers because extinct animals are stronger due to the fact they must work hard to survive. There are environment issues brought up in the series, but it is not in your face 24/7. It's mostly about the girls fighting the aliens (they are the best part of the series!). A basic magical girl show. Near the end the series really steps up in its game! Kind of gets dark. It's also cute and there is romance like you would find in any magical girl series. It's just different from others because the girls get their powers through science rather than magic.

I have both read and watch the manga and the anime. The anime is like a billion times better than the manga. The manga focuses on Ichigo tooo much. I recommend this series to any magical girl fan.

Keep watching. It has it as a theme but like yami said its not in your face 24/7. Its super cute. If you liked Sailor Moon, you would like Tokyo Mew Mew. Just make sure you're watching it subbed. ^_^

Yes watch it sub! The dub was made by 4kids. It was meh and they lost the rights to it so they didn't finish dubbing it.

Wow, I hated this series... was way too childish for me unfortunately and too much filler. Nothing to appeal to older magical girl fans. Talking about the subbed version also.

The filler is good exactly. >.> The manga only focused on Ichigo left the other girls out. I say there are childish episodes, but the later part of the series gets serious.

I ever watch Tokyo Mew Mew on the TV on every Sunday morning, and I must say this series is okay. Not really as amazing as Sailor Moon or as adorable as Cardcaptor Sakura, but this series is still okay to enjoy.

I have a neighbor who was a huge fan of Tokyo Mew Mew, she had so many Tokyo Mew Mew collectible sets at her house and she always asked me to play Tokyo Mew Mew when she came to my house for play. My neighbour often asked to play as Minto when we were playing Tokyo Mew Mew, while my neighbor herself often played as Ichigo. Sometimes, she came to my house watching Tokyo Mew Mew on Sunday morning.

My favorite Tokyo Mew Mew characters are Ryou, Minto, Zakuro, and Pudding. Ryou is cool yet funny at the same time, I like his interaction with a ichigo and his romance with Lettuce. Minto and Zakuro are cool, their interaction is nice, it is rather cute to see Minto's admiration for Zakuro. Pudding is so cute yet she can be quite a badass.

My favorite pairings are:

Ichigo x Ryou, their interraction can be funny to watch and it was cute to see on how Ryou and Ichigo like to argue sometimes.

Minto x Zakuro, a guilty pleasure of mine, I think Minto's fixation for Zakuro can be kind of cute.

Pudding x Tart, really adorable I must say. How can I resist this pairing?

Ryou x Lettuce, another cute pairing and another Ryou related pairing that I like aside from Ichigo x Ryou.

I am not a big fan of Ichigo x Kish because the pairing itself can be rather disturbing with Kish stalkerish attitude for Ichigo. Ichigo x Masaya is another least favorite pairing, because Ichigo's crush for Masaya can be a little irritating at times and their realtionship isn't as cute as Ichigo x Ryou. I don't hate Masaya or Kish, I  like Kish and I am okay with Masaya, but I just don't like Masaya or Kish to be paired up with Ichigo.

I'm currently reading some Tokyopop scans of this manga online. I find it adorable, and is probably my current favorite magical girl series besides Sailor Moon (which shall always be my favorite manga and series as a whole). I really liked that they kinda ditched the "animal mascot approaches the MCs and grants them magical powers" trope for a more science based (well, loosley science based) way of having magical girls, which gives it a cool science fiction twist.
Is it a little trope filled? Yes. Does it have its flaws? Yes. Is it still good? Definently.
Also RyouxIchigo or go home.

YES I AGREE WITH WHAT'S SAID ABOUT KISH AND MASAYA.

I didn't wanna dislike Ichigo x Masaya cause of the whole "Of Course People hate on the nice guys!" But seeing every episode of Ichigo fangirling over Masaya was starting to get irritating. Plus he just kinda seems....well lifeless. His reactions are almost always, "Do the nice thing."

And Kish could have one moment of confessing his love to Ichigo to then trying to kill her. The idea of Ichigo getting in Kish's way even though he loves her could've been a great idea if he wasn't always flipping his coins about wanting to kill her or not.

Though I wish the series knew what it was doing. Most of the time it was just "Find the Mew Aqua until Deep Blue awakens!"
