PostSubject: Manga titles I enjoyed   8th January 2015, 6:54 pm

My tastes in many different areas seem to fall more into a niche category than the wildly popular categories.  Manga is one such example.

As such, I have read and enjoyed several different manga titles that seem to be less well-known among manga fans.  I have included here a list of most of these manga titles.  I'd be interested in discussing any of the following such titles here.  So if you've read any of them, please state which one(s), and we can discuss them.  And even if you haven't read one of these titles but you're curious about it, then also say so; I'm willing to be flexible here in this way.

A,A' (A, A prime) by Moto Hagio
Clover by Clamp
Mai The Psychic Girl by Kazuya Kudo and Ryoichi Ikegami
Mistress Fortune by Arina Tanemura

Each of these titles has great (in my opinion) detailed artwork, and a plotline that appealed to me.

I've heard of Clover, but never read it. I haven't heard of any of the others that are listed though.

Do you know what Clover is about and/or its overall story-line, silverskywind?  Because if not, I'd be willing to give you that info, spoiler-free.

Clover is a manga series about a group of people called Clovers in a futuristic, dystopian world.  What is a Clover?  It's a person with special powers that the government of the story finds fearful to it and/or difficult to control,  because of a fear that they and their special powers will be used by others against this government.  Clovers are assigned a number based on their special powers; 1-leaf Clovers are the least powerful, while 4-leaf Clovers are the most powerful.  Though I should correct myself and say "the 4-leaf Clover" instead of "4-leaf Clovers", because part-way through the story, the reader finds out that there is only one 4-leaf that has been discovered - a girl named Sue.

That is the setting of the story, as the reader finds out in short sequences in middle parts of the story.  The presentation is rather unique, as the whole story is presented in short sequences to help create the mood & setting.  Also, the story is not presented completely chronologically; most parts are chronological, but they are sometimes interrupted by flashbacks to different parts of the story.  So what is the spoiler-free plot of the story?

As the story begins, Sue is living a life of isolation in a large cage.  Soon afterward, the government grants Sue permission to travel outside her cage to a place called Fairy Park - her one big wish in life - under certain conditions.  Kazuhiko, a man who had been in the military but subsequently had retired from it, is forced by the government to temporarily come out of retirement to escort (and protect) Sue to Fairy Park.  Their adventurous journey is the focus of Volumes 1 and 2 of the manga.  Volume 3 is a prequel that focuses on Ora, a 1-leaf young woman who is a famous singer in the Clover world.  Her connections to the first 2 volumes are that it is her most famous song that is often sung by Sue in the first 2 volumes, plus she is a lover of Kazuhiko in Volume 3.  Volume 4 is another prequel that focuses on Ran and his history.  Ran is a 3-leaf boy who is a minor character in the first 2 volumes due to making a couple small appearances there.

Clover was released in English originally around the turn of the century by Tokyopop, with each Volume being given its own separate tankubon.  A couple years later, though, it went out of print in this left-to-right (but apparently realistic in every other way) format.  I was lucky enough to find it in the middle of this time span in a library near where I lived at the time.   And thankfully, it was re-released a few years ago by Dark Horse Manga, in a right-to-left format, and with all 4 Volumes combined into one Omnibus collection.  Clover can be bought at the Amazon web-store , at Powell's Books or on its web-store , or anywhere else you can buy used manga.

Magical Pokemon Journey
Little Butterfly
Wish
Magical Knight Rayearth (1 and 2)

I used to own A,A' but I don't remember it very well. I read it a lot until my copy started to fall apart.

I understand.  It is the one (of the four listed in my intro post here) that I remember the least, due to the fact that I only read A, A'  several years ago.  I bought a used copy of it semi-recently, but haven't had a chance to really get back into it since.

Note that you can easily get a replacement for that copy of yours that fell apart, VBabe, if you liked it enough.  It's available at the Alibris used book store on-line, and is probably also available through the Amazon Marketplace (to find this out, just go to any Amazon web-store page and do a search on Moto Hagio, then click on the result for A, A Prime).
