PostSubject: Toonami: Let Us Reminisce    Mon Nov 28, 2011 9:04 pm

Hallo all!

I could not resist posting this topic. Smile For those of you who live in America (and and maybe elsewhere?) many of you who watched anime in the 90s may remember Toonami! Really, it was the start of many fabulous anime, including Sailor Moon!

One of the things that I loved best about Toonami was their intros to the anime that they featured. Now yes, admittedly, this meant that we who only watched anime through Toonimi were robbed of the original Japanese openings. But I must confess, I do not regret it! Tom was brilliantly fantastic and I adored all the anime intros. So I thought we could share our favorites here. Smile

I am starting with my favorite Sailor Moon intros.

This intro here is the heart of my Sailor Moon childhood. That beginning with the little tinkling of music, my gosh, the excitement it brought me! It may be silly but those quick clips of lines -- I remember them so distinctly. Very Happy

I remember this intro to be the most teasing one yet, because they included clips from the movies! It drove me mad that I had no idea where those movie-specific attacks were when watching the tv series. XD

Dragon Ball Z Android Saga intro. I adored the way Trunks yelled No!. And Vegeta's "I am the prince of all Saiyans once again" were the most epic words to me ever. XD

And may I just say that I loved Tom's voice? It was oh so smexy. ^^

If Toonami could be a drug, I would be in rehab to this day. OMG I loved it with a flaming passion. Sailor Moon was my all-time favorite, and then I started getting into DBZ and Hamtaro. Still regardless, it gave me something to do while all the kids that hated me would play outside.

So Toonami thank you for being my best friend.

Yes, Toonami was great for me as well. I still remember the day it ended I think it was that the ship died or something like that and Tom (was that his name Question) left with a jet pack after saying goodbye to all of us I remember crying that day

Toonami introduced me to some really good anime. CN just wasn't the same without it ever since.

Toonami was great. ;_; So. Many. Memories. (And I loved the dubs. I know, I know, but it was so much fun to watch as a kid after school with my family.)

Anyone remember their comical attempts to "clean up" Tenchi Muyo, though? They did fairly well with Sailor Moon, but... Even as a child, I didn't think that TM was a kid's show. ^^;

Rurouni Kenshin was great, too- and Gundam Wing. Giant robots in space- what's not to like?

I seem to recall that they added Teen Titans before Toonami went down completely? :? It's not exactly an anime, but that show rocked- way better than the too-serious comicbook version.

Oh yeah, The Teen Titans. They aren't anime but they were made anime style. It's terrible that they were cancelled. I loved them.

I miss the Toonami I grew up with. Didn't Tom go through like... three different transformations/upgrades?

I do remember hating Bobobo-Bobo-Bobo with a passion.

Definitely remembered Toonami and must admit, the day Toonami was gone was the day I pretty much stop watching CN.

Tom was definitely an intriging character created for this spot and I must admit that I thought it was very cool.

And even though I LOVE the Sailor Moon openings, I did like how the "start" of the show was presented on Toonami. It wasn't cheezy and was actually really creative (especially the very first one that Sailor Jupiter posted on the top).

If you guys want to see all the forms of Tom, definitely check out the link I posted. They have videos from all of the different Toms, even stuff from when Moltar was in charge. He was the first host, btw.

They have all of the videos from the little mini stories they would do, whenever the ship would get attacked or something. They have every single promo video for every show aired on toonami ever. It's a great resource. Also, if you want to cry again, you can watch the farewell videos from Toonami's last broadcast.

Anyway, Toonami ended because the people behind Toonami were also running Adult Swim. Apparently, they wanted to focus on Adult Swim so...bye bye Toonami. Sad

Apparently, there is some new Teen Titans stuff coming out. The voice actors are working on some shorts right now. So yay for that!

And Toonami was not specifically just anime only. It was an afternoon action cartoon block. So it aired action oriented cartoons, with a focus on anime. But they aired other shows like Batman, Batman Beyond, The Real Johnny Quest (i used to really like that show), Reboot, Megas XLR, and Justice League just to name a few.

Also, does everyone remember when Toonami had the online streaming service called Toonami Reactor? It was the first time I ever watched streaming anime (there was no youtube back then). They had Record of Lodoss War TV and a few other shows. I loved ROLW! I never did finish watching it though. I def need too. I also have to give props to Toonami's Midnight Run for introducing me to Daft Punk. They aired the first four songs from the Discovery album movie Interstella 5555, which in turn got me hooked on Daft Punk.

Toonami you did so many great things. I only wish another great block would come around for todays generation. I don't even know what is on Cartoon Network in the afternoon anymore. Do they even still have blocks like that? Last time I watched Cartoon Network the only quality shows that were on was stuff like The Misadventures of FlapJack, Chowder, and Adventure Time. I also kinda liked Ben 10, but not that much.../sigh Now I'm sad about having no Toonami.

OH btw, this reminds me, there is some website that acts like a replacement channel for Toonami. They stream anime and other Toonami shows in the way Toonami did, with all the promos and everything. I just can't remember the website. If anyone does, they should link it, otherwise I will if i find it again.

In Australia we all loved Cheez TV, it aired from 1995 to 2002 - I think I watched it from 1998 to the very end. But they played Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Cardcaptor, Dragon Ball Z etc. and we watched every single one.

Then they cancelled Cheez TV and made Toasted TV and my generation were all like wtf? WHY!?

The video is just the last episode ever with all the best bits over the years. I don't have sound on my computer at work so I apologize if it's crap and I also apologize for the very strong Aussie accents. Haha.

Very Happy Toonami!! Unfortunately, I think I got Toonami after Sailor Moon was taken off (as I don't remember watching it...) but I FREAKING LOVED YU YU HAKUSHO and DRAGONBALL Z and Hamtaro and Batman Beyond and Ruroni Kenshin, and Gundam Wing, and--and--and--- SO MANY GOOD SHOWS.

And then there was Adult Swim, with it's Cowboy Beebop, Outlaw Star and Inu Yasha -- those creators were the best thing about Cartoon Network.

=D thanks for the trip on the nostalgia train x]

Are you talking about this place?

Bleh, I don't watch Cartoon Network, anymore. In my opinion, most of the shows suck. I just get frustrated when I watch the new shows, because they seem so pointlessly stupid. I loved Toonami. That's what got me started on anime. Most of my favorite animus/mangas are the same ones I started watching on Toonami (Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, and Gundam Wing).

So guys I couldn't find the april fools toonami joke thread so I thought I post this here. I found out that Adult Swim post thing on their twitter asking people if toonami should stay and they got a lot responses! This guy on youtube says it's back, but I haven't seen Adult Swim post their results on twitter. So let's cross our fingers and hope it's really coming back!

Probably because not a lot people were watching it anymore. I will admit I did stop watching it as well. They weren't showing good anime anymore and I was sick of Naruto.

Also, one of the main reasons Toonami was taken off the air was because the guys that were working on Toonami were also working on Adult Swim. I believe they wanted to focus more on Adult Swim at the time since it was gaining in popularity. Also at that point, Toonami had been reduced to a Saturday morning block of shows. I do seem to remember reading somewhere that whoever the higher up was at the time (and might still be?) didn't like Toonami and wanted it off air... but I'm not 100% positive on that and don't quote me on it. I'd have to find the stuff I had read up on toonami a few years ago.

Yeah it used to be on every week day and then it was moved to Saturday nights for a new week day block called Magoozi. Sorry I spelled it wrong it had a girl hosted the block in a underwater house thing. That also went away as well. I don't remember Toonami being on Saturday mornings. I remember when they tried putting it on Kids WB.

I recall it being a Saturday morning block for a period of time and also being a Satruday prime time block. I don't remember when it was that though. I remember Miguzi though because I sometimes watched Totally Spies since nothing else would be on. -_-

i'm not a american but why you want that tonami?? it's seems like its similar to the german pokito.
pokito = endless animes/mainstream animes, cencored animes, kids animes ..... i didnt know a real german animefan who still like pokito after they growing up.
pokito now: Dragon Ball Z (censored), Naruto (censored), One Piece (censored), Pokemon, Digimon. also in the past: Precure, Jeanne, Doremi, Monster Rancher, Wedding Peach.
nobody needs censored animes,
nobody need that the tv station will show again and again and again the same shows since YEARS oO

*people here in GER wants a free-tv station with a similar concept like the pay-tv station Animax (some Animax shows: Death Note, Elfen Lied, Higschool of the dead, Dance in the Vampire Bund, Ergo Proxy, Soul Eater bla bla)
*of course the germans want that various dvd-only animes get a free-tv premiere that other people understand that anime are more than Naruto, One Piece, Pokemon (some dvd only animes here: Madoka, Angel Beats, K-ON, Black Butler, Ouran high school host club, Maid Sama, Vampire Knight bla bla bla)
*and OF COURSE they want new animes at free-tv. with new i mean brand new anime like Mirai Nikki, Another and/or animes who are still not licensed in germany (like Higurashi, Clannad, Toradora, Pandora Hearts)....

thats why i cant understand your opinion why you americans want that tonami back oO
did you want 4kids back too??
it's nothing against you i just cant understand your opinion ^^

A part of it is nostalgia, a part of it is if it were to be aired again, it will most likely run on Adult Swim, which is a late night adult comedy block on Cartoon Network. Most anime that Adult Swim has aired is usually uncensored (to a point) and has generally been a very good dub, for example: Cowboy Bebop, Trigun (though i don't like ALL the voices, the dub did little censoring), Fullmetal ALchemist: Brotherhood, Bleach, etc.

Tom, the host of Toonami, was also a very enjoyable host. There were often stories and scenarios that viewers could interact with and do things for on Toonami's website.

You'd also be surprised at how many people here in the US rather enjoy watching shows like Dragonball Z in English. (I can watch both voices, I like both English and Japanese voices). And Funimation went back and redid Dragonball Z so it was uncut.

Most of the reason anime is censored is for TV, most anime now a days that comes out on DVD over here is not censored at all, they only have to change some things for TV airing.

Toonami appeals to the audience that watches Adult Swim and people in their late teens and up to late twenties (some even older), now that there is an older crowd that is willing to watch Toonami, it will easily be able to air during Adult Swim's time block for anime (which is Saturday nights) and easily air uncut editions of the anime they are showing.

Back in the day before Adult Swim came around, they had a night block for Toonami called Toonami Midnight Run. This is where they were able to air uncut versions of the anime that were shown during the day, for example Outlaw Star and Gundam Wing.

I think putting Toonami back on the air would be a wise and successful move for Adult Swim and their viewer ratings for Saturday Nights may go up. Adult Swim has also gotten notorious for disliking their anime viewers (they've said it jokingly in their bumpers on tv...its been a while since I watched Adult Swim so that view may have changed in the past year or so) and I think that with the popularity of the April Fool's joke, they've realized that they have something good on their hands.

Regardless of airing censored anime (you can blame that on the US's tv regulations), Toonami was a wonderful afternoon cartoon block that was basically like my entry drug into the anime world. Had it not been for Toonami, I may not have ever gotten into anime and gotten interested in trying to find the uncensored versions of the shows I enjoyed on TV. I think thats how many of the people who watched toonami felt.

And I apologize that this got ridiculously long. lol.

@small lady

i have nothing against cencure when they are needed, in japan the tv-versions of various animes are cencored with "darken" a part of the footage or pixles.
but i HATE that kind of cencor americans & germans (ok only pokito) did:
*cuting scenes,
*dialouge cencure
*and the baddest thing: strange footage edits.
the One Piece and esp Naruto cencure in germany are just stupid but i never seen so much (and strange) cencure like america did. i saw a scene (USA) where a sushi in Pokemon where edited into a sandwich xD

thats why everyone here in ger hates pokito. it's true that the most of us are grown up with it and watch some of the first animes on it (like you guys did with toonami) but that was long ago.

i'm happy that i personaly didnt need the free-tv stations. the dvd only released are good, the dubbing are not so good like the japanese originals but better than english dubs. (the only english dub who are better then the german are 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya' - my own experience)
so i'm happy with the dvds here. and i didnt undestand why americans didnt buy more dvds. they are MUCH (!!!!!) cheaper than german anime dvds/bds...

hm maybe i'm a bit OT ... sorry ..

To each I own I guess.

However like Small Lady said having Toonami on Adult Swim will have uncensored anime. The only thing that would be edited is the theme songs and eye catches will be removed.

Personally I rather watch an anime in English. I can look away from the screen and know what the characters are saying. Also I believe in every country there are good voice actors and bad voice actors. There are certain animes I can't watch in Japanese because I do not like the voice actors.

As for the DVD thing well I think they only sell box sets now. I rarely see individual DVDS. So what if I ended up not liking the anime which means I wasted 50 bucks. Yeah I can return it, but most stores just give a gift card to go buy something else. Also most stores aren't carrying anime anymore. Either have to go to special movie store, buy it online, download it illeagaly or be like me and pray to find it on a steaming website/youtube. Oh you can also find them at anime cons, but those are expansive to go to.

Well, I don't see that happening as far as the cutting of scenes and such goes. That doesn't really happen much with most anime now a days. I would imagine only stuff like Pokemon and Bakugan or whatever the heck is popular for the younger kids might get some censorship, but like I said, if Toonami were to be a night block during hte Adult Swim timeslots (which it very highly will be), then I don't think there will be much censoring, like cutting whole scenes, etc. I really doubt we'll see anything along the lines of the Dic Sailor Moon dub again. The only stuff that gets the bad treatment is stuff 4kids get their hands on and that those series are usually aimed at younger kids so it doesn't really affect me that much as I don't care to watch series like Pokemon, etc.

Also, lots of people buy DVDs here, but while they may be cheaper than german dvds, they are still expensive for some of us over here. I'm sorry but I can't always be spending up to $100 for a boxset of DVDs. :/ And back even still, some DVD singles in the stores used to be up to $30. For one DVD! Srsly!?

But I digress from that.

Also, there are lots of good English dubs, but I guess you have to like American sounding voice actors. Trust me, growing up with anime like I did here, its come a long way from the late 90s/early 2000s english dubs of shows. Anime dubs have improved vastly over here in the US and I can say that as a previous dub hater and subtitled elitist (i went through a period of time where i refused to watch ANY anime in english, only in japanese), I've grown to like watching some series in englsih.

But this discussion has gone way off being about Toonami. ^^;; Whoops!

And @Yamichan, you are so right! The only place to buy Anime DVDs these days is Best Buy and FYE. And anime DVDs are EXPENSIVE at FYE!
