PostSubject: World Masterpiece Theater anime   9th March 2015, 3:07 pm

Has anyone heard of the World Masterpiece Theater? It was a children's anime staple that began in the 1970s where Nippon Animation would annually air anime based on popular books from the 20th century such as Anne of Green Gables, A Little Princess, Peter Pan, Daddy Long Legs, Little Women, etc. They started with Heidi: Girl of the Alps in 1974, stopped in 1996, resumed in 2007 but ended in 2009. It isn't as successful as it used to be, but many of the anime from there have received some subbing treatment in the past few years, making them more accessible. These anime have a lot of depth, heart, and soul poured into them, and they absolutely DO NOT adhere to the anime tropes we see today, even in their newer works.

My favorite WMT anime are as follows...

1. Dog of Flanders
2. Les Miserables Shoujo Cosette
3. A Little Princess
4. Ie Naki Ko Remi
5. Anne of Green Gables/Konnichiwa Anne
6. Perrine Monogatari
7. Alps Stories: My Annette
8. Romeo's Blue Skies
9. Little Women and its sequel
10. Porphy's Long Journey

I haven't seen the Heidi anime, Peter Pan, or others, as many of them aren't subbed or are only partially subbed. But I highly recommend them to any person who wants to watch something refreshing and full of heart. But they're mostly very slow paced and focused on story telling and character development, so they're not for people who want action, gore, fanservice, horror, etc. I wish these anime were dubbed! Why couldn't these be part of my childhood?! Dog of Flanders is the most dear to my heart. What are your favorite WMT anime?

I've read some of those books, but didn't realize that some of them had been made into animes! Like A Little Princess and Anne of Green Gables!(This had been an animated cartoon on PBS in America for a while, but was taken off the air).  I watched a few of Jo's Boys, but didn't realize that Little Women and Little Men were also animated!  I'll have to watch these sometime!  Even if they are only half subbed and have to "drop it" afterwards because of that!

I haven't seen most of them but I know they're very highly regarded.  I've seen the film version of The Dog of Flanders Pioneer released on home video back in the 90s.  I remember Pioneer had trailers for it on the dub VHS tapes for the Sailor Moon movies.  Is that film version based on the Dog of Flanders TV series or is it a separate movie?  Anyway, the Dog of Flanders anime movie was very sad and made me bawl my eyes out at the ending, so make sure you bring your tissues when you watch it.

I LOVE THE MOVIE!!! It was the first exposure I had to DoF! The movie is a compressed, alternate continuity to the TV series. A remake to be exact, even though it shares lots of old characters from the series. It's just as good as the series, though!

Does the movie have the same voice cast as the series?  I might check the show out sometime just because I love the Dog of Flanders so much.  Apparently the original Western book is very popular in Japan and has been adapted into film and TV by the Japanese many times.

No, because the series was made in 1975. The movie was made in 1997. The English dub was made some years later, and I think it has better actors in the dub because some characters in the Japanese version had weird voices IMO.

I remember Dog of Flanders! Back when I first got into anime, I would sometimes just buy something CAUSE it was anime (or my mom would cause she wouldn't know what id want) and thus I ended up with a VHS tape of Dog of Flanders. It has been quite a long time since I watched it, but I remember it being very good (and sad). I never knew it was a part of a series...that's really awesome!

Is there any place to watch any of these online?

Heidi was a big part of my childhood. It was fairly popular here in Germany and only recently replaced by a (pretty awful-looking) CGI-remake.
I've also seen some episodes of Peter Pan. Anne of Green Gables was one that I could never get into, but that one was also really popular here- as was pretty much any of those. We got German versions up till 1995 (minus Shoukoshi Cedie, for whatever reason), the last one published here was Romeo no Aoi Sora... but I think at that point the interest had greatly declined already.

I also watched some of Les Misérables Shoujo Cosette, but I could never get through it because I always lost track. Mainly because the childhood episodes were not that exciting as a teenage girl xD (Yes, it's been a while since I last watched that one...)

Watch Les Mis! It starts off very slow, but its mostly for character development purposes! It gets soooo much better when Cosette goes off with Jean!

I'll try and pick it up again sometime. I really want to see the stuff that was actually in the musical because I LOVE the musical <3

A fansub group has just started working on Swiss Family Robinson (Fushigi no Shima no Flone) and have reached episode 20 so far.

I know, right?! It'd give anime a better name in general, and people would respect it more.
