Yesterday's chat was awesome. I've never helped moderate one before and it was a great first time, working with Brit. Everyone was just great. And I'd like to give congrats to cardea for winning our trivia challenge Our members, old and new were just wonderful.

Major Spoilers

@magic713 wrote:
Now as for the Volume 5. We start with another abduction, and we see Usagi still trapped on Nemesis with the remaining Senshi. However, unlike in the anime, Usagi doesn't have to wait for her prince to come to her rescue. I think the anime writers thought that change could make up for the whole break up arc, idk. And she does an awesome job at it. Gaining her power, to transform into Sailor Moon, touching the ground and causing the entire ground to break open, freeing Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter. That has to be my favorite scene in the arc.

Of course, they arrive back to Crystal Tokyo and they find both Chibiusa and Tuxedo Mask gone. And then discover Chibiusa had been brainwashed by Wiseman, transformed to Black Lady and Tux is brainwashed...again (a little too soon in my opinion after Dark Kingdom). And we discover that the cloaked skeleton is just a literal puppet of Wiseman and his true form is Death Phantom aka the planet Nemesis. This actually takes things up to an eleven for me since battling a planet is totally more intimidating. And it was a total surprise for me, since I didn't expect it, having only seen the anime, which downplayed Nemesis in general.

And finally, Sailor Pluto. Man, she really shined in this arc as oppose to anime, where she's just...there. Her relationship with Chibiusa was so touching and the fact that Pluto sacrifice was what freed Chibiusa was so beautiful. Not to mention that it was what allowed Chibiusa to awaken as Sailor Chibi Moon. I loved that.

I also got a lot of satisfaction getting to see my OTP (Usagi x Mamoru) obliterated that creep, Demande. I am fine with his redeeming qualities in anime, but he had none of these in manga, so I was glad to see the couple end him. And then We get to see Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon with the support of Tuxedo Mask destroy Death Phantom. Some families spend time going to the park, others spend time obliterating eldrich abominations, lol. And then a touching send off for Chibiusa, lots of tears. Aaaand she comes back a few pages later, same shot as before.

This was a good conclusion to this arc. Leaves a little tid bit of a future arc with a new brooch and weapon, but not cliffhang-y as the last arc.

I did like many things about the Black Moon arc, so I'd say it's like my third favorite arc of the manga. And next up is Infinity and I can't wait.

Discussion Question of the Month:

Since we are doing something different for the month, let's do a more general question:  what changes from the original Sailor Moon manga are you favorite in any other version of Sailor Moon (original anime, Myu, live action, etc.)?

Currently Reading:

Now that we've completed the first five volumes of the kanzenban (meaning we've totally taken down the first two arcs of Sailor Moon like a weekly youma. ;D)  we're going to change things up and pause on all the Sailor Moon love. Cause guess what? Naoko released other works too and they deserve a little attention!  This story we've chosen is a one volume collection of Maria, a romance story based off the book "Daddy Long Legs" by Jean Webber. The chapters were originally published in Nakayoshi magazine.

Synopsis wrote:
Maria is a girl attending a Christian private school. Her mother is sick and in the hospital, her family poor. They live off the money of a man who's identity is unknown to Maria. He is called "Daddy Long-Legs" and he supports Maria and her mother with only one fee: Maria becoming his bride. Just who is this mysterious man? Is it the doctor? Someone she does not know? A boy from school...?

This is exciting! I've never read this before, and I'm really looking forward to it!

As for the question, I love a lot of the filler episodes from the anime. They got boring after a while, but it made the series feel a lot more lighthearted than the manga.

Oh, maria is one of my favorites! It's such a sweet story.

And my answer to the question is that the filler was necessary as heck. The manga made usagi, mamoru and chibiusa the only rounded characters-everyone else were rather flat secondary characters. Venus was an example of both, she was rounded out up until the death busters arc. The filler added so much more characterization and world building-even fleshing out the villains so they weren't so flat. I'm just glad that they never used filler during the final battles of each story arc.

Whoohoo!! I read many of Naoko's works back in, like, middle school, but I honestly forget if I've read Maria! Either way, I'm excited to read/reread it!

And my favorite thing change in other versions would have to be, like Cosmos, the characterization of non-Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibiusa characters. Rather than the original anime though, I like how this was done best in the live action. While PGSM had filler and many monsters-of-the-day, it didn't limit itself to that format as much as the anime did, allowing the girls and villains plotlines and backstories which extended across multiple episodes.

I'm with y'all on the characterization. Also I like more specific things like the Rainbow Crystal arc and Princess Serenity's revelation, the final battle with Queen Beryl in the 90s anime, the Makaijuu arc, the Ayakashi Sisters, SuperS (especially all the cute Chibiusa and Pegasus interactions) and the Nehellenia arc of Stars to name a few. I'm 100% on board with live action as I feel its the best telling of the Dark Kingdom story.

I also like things in Myu and how well they handle them: Starlights and Kakyuu, SuperS story sorta being a combo of anime and manga with its own twists, Mugen Gakuen adding in essentially refugees from a planet that the Death Buster's destroyed, Galaxia in general, the different take on the Amazoness Quartet and their origins (it ties them closer to Chibiusa and makes way more sense as far as why they'd have a tie to her).

Annnd i could go on. xD

Since the only other incarnations I saw were 90s anime and Crystal, I'm going to point out what I liked in the 90s anime that the manga didn't have. I definitely loved some fillers, like the Rainbow Crystals, because they had some development in the overall story, though other fillers, like the majority of SuperS, were not so appealing since there was hardly any development to the overall story. I do agree that the filler does sometimes help round out characters other than Usagi. I really liked the last two episodes in the first season, very intense and emotional. I also liked that many of the villains had rounded out personalities other than being MOTW.

I finished reading Maria today, though I won't say anything for now. However, I suggest everyone listen to the song that's referenced Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. It's a really lovely piano piece that is from a movie with the same title that has David Bowie in it. ^_^

I finally found a bit more time to go over the rough notes I took for volumes 4 & 5. Almost too belated but I wanted to respond to a few of your comments as well.

Putting it all under spoilers for the sake of those catching up and so as not to clutter things up with my long-winded babble XD. I’ll skip posting anything detailed for Miss Rain, but am looking forward to the live chat! That title has been on the top of my Takeuchi works list since I read Chocolate Christmas last year~.

Also, thanks for putting together the quiz & trivia for Volume 5!! So satisfying somehow mwahaha! Congrats again to @cardea for the win!

Volume 4:

Volume 5:

OKAY! I’m up to speed finally!

Two that come to mind are the inclusion of the other Outer Senshi in the Myu version of the Sailor Moon R arc in Tanjou! Ankoku no Princess Black Lady and the addition of the entire Cardian Arc of the original anime.

Also, I generally agree with cardea’s comment:

I do like how they *handled* it, even if I didn’t quite like Sailor Venus’ *character* ^^;.

Discussion Question of the Month:

As many fans know, the Sailor Moon story takes many inspirations from both Western and Eastern mythologies, the most well know ones are it's Greek/Roman inspirations. However, as seen in each arc, and especially in the upcoming Infinity arc, Naoko grabs and pulls from a multitude of myths and tales. What are some inspirations that you have noticed while reading? And to make it a challenge: how many can you point out from the series?

Currently Reading:

After a month's break to explore a different work by Naoko we continue back into Sailor Moon. We begin Volume 6, the beginning of the Mugen (Infinity) arc. We'll be introduced to some new characters, a new threat, and some new challenges to our Sailor Senshi.

Sailor Moon Vol. 6
Discussions will be opened on September 18th

I've been wanting to reply to your post for a while now...so here goes!

@Diagnosed wrote:

”magic713” wrote:
I found the whole, Chibiusa being 900 years old a little weird and completely unnecessary. The story could've easily played without that factor.
This was basically the consensus during the live chat from everyone, including myself.

It’s kind of frustrating that she doesn’t use it more in the plot. I kept thinking “why did she even introduce it, then?” However, It finally occurred to me that her anomalous age could simply be due to Naoko choosing to set the rise of the Black Moon clan in the 30th Century instead of 6-7 years after Usagi ascends the throne. She knew she wanted to use Chibiusa as a child, and I guess she was stubborn about the 30th century choice, so Chibiusa's stalled growth (and apparently stalled maturity) was the only way to bridge that gap. Though she totally could’ve just had Tux & Moon wait almost 900 years to pop out a kid instead… It wouldn't have been likely in-universe for them to do that, both from a cultural and character-centric perspective, but at least logistically it would've made more sense >.>...

The 30th century is a pretty go-to future setting in the world of sci-fi, being the end of a millennium. (If she was just looking for the end-of-millennium thing, 1999 would have been too soon for Crystal Tokyo to have been established and Chibiusa born.) Coincidentally, there was a popular series out during her childhood called Space Pirate Captain Harlock taking place in the 30th century that has a few hints of the Black Moon’s mission (from their perspective - not Wiseman’s), as well as time-travel. I’d have to investigate further than Wikipedia for any word associations or other Japanese cultural references that might have sealed the deal on it. On the surface though, I can imagine that using an already loosely established setting in the reader’s mind is particularly helpful when it comes to comics, as there's simply less room to set the scene in that medium.

A question I had while reading, related to the 900 years issue is the Black Moon clan’s cause. They are rebels against the long lifespans and yet wouldn't they also have that lifespan, being citizens of Crystal Tokyo, and able to continue to fight as long as they have because of it? Or did I misunderstand who the blessing of long life applies to?

I'm probably just as frustrated as you with Chibiusa's age in the manga. It seems irrelevant. I think since she was probably pressed for time she wasn't really able to think it through. In the anime, at least they were able to explain that there was a long time gap between 20th and 30th centuries with the whole ice age thing that eventually SM brings everyone out of (i think thats what it was? been a while since I watched R lol). I think certain plot points like these kinda show how Naoko was still a bit of a novice in the storytelling department (...hey editors, where were you with this decision? XD)

I'm not sure about the Captain Harlock reference but I know with the whole alien abduction theme that was going on with the BM Arc was due to I think the talk of aliens being a bit of a popular fad at the time? I seem to remember reading that or something once.

As far as your question goes, I believe that the Black Moon Clan does have the long lifespans as well but they believed it was blasphemous to god (with lower case cause who knows what religion she meant) and that it wasn't right for humans to live so long. If i'm remembering what they said correctly (since its been since June/July lmao). I believe the blessing of long life applied to all humans on Earth. Though, I'm unsure of what happens when people are banished off planet...

@Diagnosed wrote:
Is Chibiusa and Pluto knowing each other during the pre-Black Moon invasion supposed to be a secret or did the Queen and King know about it? I wasn't too clear on that when reading...

Yes, they did know about it. I forget which volume its in but theres a scene where NQS asks Pluto if Small Lady was a bother to her duties.

[*]Does Tux teleport to Usagi and Chibiusa when they're being attacked by Rubeus (p.88-89)?
[*]I love Chibiusa's incantation for the time key!
[*]Interesting that King Endymion identifies the Door of Space-Time as one that leads to Hades though it clearly can lead anywhere.
[*]I love how different the enemy is in nature from DK. It's a totally different threat and not obvious at all to the Senshi at first that in the end it's just gonna be another force that wants the Silver Crystal.
[*]Lol the malefic black Crystal is literally negative energy. Is that a real thing? Naoko's pretty accurate with these things usually… Can anyone here explain the device Luna and Artemis are using to measure it on p.57?
[*]I wonder why Naoko chose such a very science-based focus for Esmeraude's minions when most of their force has been paranormal?

-Omg lololol @ #NeverforgetEndo1993
-Who knows how Tux gets to places so fast...maybe he's got secret super speed xD
-While it's possible that it's just a made up name for the stories purposes (Cause c'mon, what exactly is "Dark Power" when you see that as a name of an attack xD). There is "Negative Energy" when it comes to physics and talking about gravitational fields and quantum physics (see wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_energy) as well as Dark matter, antimatter, dark energy... Considering her background in sciences, it's possible she drew inspiration from these concepts. Although, calling something "negative" or "Dark" energy while Sailor Moon has a "positive" or "light" energy seems sort of an obvious choice. The whole good vs evil thing.

I have to disagree here, actually. Maybe I’m not seeing the angle you're looking from, but I feel like the new covers are a nice evolution from her first batch of covers - it's the same style really (compared to the more rounded cuteness of the Shinsouban) but the colouring is better imo. Says the person with absolutely no real art experience whatsoever XD.

I agree that the coloring is really nice in these covers! What I meant with stiff was more about the characters, their poses and anatomy. Something just seems off to me on some of the covers?

Totally! I never would have thought of doing that… I know it’s been used a few times since then in other Japanese games (Zelda: Majora’s Mask & FF7 iirc?) but no idea if it was used before Sailor Moon.

Actually, Transformers did! The 1987 Transformers movie had them fighting against Unicron, a giant planet/star/everything eating robot planet. There is also an opposing force, Primus, another giant robot planet. I also wouldn't be surprised if its come up often in sci-fi stories and older anime too.

Yesplz! (Come to think of it, I guess her initial drop from the sky is somewhat similar in that respect...)

Omg! I never noticed that parallel! I wonder if that was intentional. :O

Oooooh yes! I 100% agree here. Though I think at that point in Myu, they simply couldn't NOT include the outers. They were too popular! XD But still, they are written in perfectly and it kinda helps the general canon question of "where the heck are the outers in the future??"

Also yes, Makaiju Arc is actually one of my favs. Especially it's finale. Very Happy

PHEW that was a lot lmao!

PostSubject: Re: Sailor Moon Manga Reading Club [Hiatus until 2018!]   8th September 2017, 11:43 am

Hey everyone!  I feel so bad that I missed the María discussion - I was looking forward to talking to everyone.  Since I didn’t get to discuss it, I decided that I would post a discussion about what I found interesting, and anyone who wanted to could read through it.  I assume that I am repeated something things, and I apologize.  I did sort everything by paragraph, so if there is a topic that is just repetition you can skip that paragraph and you will hopefully be safe.  Smile

The first thing I noticed was in the illustrations.  I will admit that I haven’t read enough manga to no if this is a standard set up, but I noticed that Kazuma looks a great deal like Mamoru.  Like I said, I don’t know if this is a standard look for romantic heroes or not, but it did make me A: more likely to feel for Kazuma and B: made me assume that he would be the romantic lead (not that the text didn’t do the same thing).  The similarities between the two guys is, I admit, a pretty small issue, but it is something that impacted my reading of the story so I figured I should mention it.  Oh, and because I do like the images, here is a picture of each:
Kazuma and Mamoru:

Okay, next thing I need to mention I am pretty sure was discussed, but there is the use of Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.  Since I feel good about saying that other people have mentioned it, I will just add that I wondered when I was reading if the choice in music had as much to do with connecting Kazuma to Celliers as with setting a mood through the sound of the music itself.  I will mention that if it did, this also made me like him more, since I had a massive crush on Celliers in my freshman year of college.

Moving right along, I saw that our topic for the next arc is mythology, which made me laugh because this story put me in mind of a myth as well, specifically, that of Eros and Psyche.  In the story, Psyche has to marry Eros, but she doesn’t know who he is, and she is not allowed to look at him or find out.  Eventually, she looks while he sleeps, but the oil from the lamp wakes him and he finds out.  Than, as usual, she has to complete difficult tasks to earn the right to be his wife again, and she gets help to succeed before they live happily ever after.  The requirements of María’s relationship with Daddy-Long-Legs set me in mind of the myth, even when María tried to find out who Daddy-Long-Legs was and Kazuma got hurt, though it was a lot less trouble that what Psyche had to do.  Smile

Speaking of other stories, I would also like to mention the connections between books and María, there are also the differences between María and Daddy-Long-Legs.  I am worried that would have been discussed already, too, so I am going to just mention one aspect that struck me: María’s family.  Judy in Daddy-Long-Legs was an orphan, and her actions were more heavily dependent upon her own ambition.  However, María has an ill mother, and she is constantly in the conflict between following her own goals and taking care of her mother fulfilling her wishes.  This change struck me because the focus on a family who depends on María feels like a fairy tale to me (think about how many fairytale princesses have to help take care of their family, either through their work like Cinderella or through their marriage, like Sleeping Beauty’s prince saving the castle when he wakes her).  Mind you, María is far happier, since most of the princess’s are mistreated, and María’s mother clearly loves her.  So it is a fairy tale without the evil family, yay!

Okay, this is really long, so I am going to let this go here. Though, I should probably add one more thing: I liked the book a lot.  Thanks for pointing it out, because I have enjoyed both María and Daddy-Long-Legs, and I probably wouldn’t have found them on my own!  PS - Hopefully my computer will be fixed for the next chat, and I can join in properly!  Otherwise I might give up and download the app to my phone.

Finaaalllly getting to respond to you Arkas! Sorry it took so long. ;-;

So first, wow! It's awesome that you had the chance to read Daddy-Long-Legs as well and brought it up because that actually got looked over in the discussion. I didn't get a chance to read it myself and I'm guessing the others may not have as well (since i don't recall discussing it) so if you wanted to add anymore thoughts in the thread that'd be awesome.

Re: Illustrations: The interesting thing is Maria was released a year before Sailor V or Sailor Moon even started! I've also seen the "Mamoru" look alike male character pop up in Naoko's other works before so...it's clear she's got a preference for her men. Haha. I don't think that look is really standard across romance shoujo though I haven't read very many. I just haven't seen too many Mamoru look-a-likes either.

Re: Music: I've actually never seen the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (which is where the song comes from for those of you who don't know. It has David Bowie in it and while it doesn't sound like the usual type of movie I'd watch, it does sound like a good movie based on the synopsis I read. I assume you've watched it then? Id like to hear more about your take on the context of the movie with Kazuma and stuff then. :O

Re: Mythology: Oh wow! That's a whole other side of this I would've never thought about while reading this story, but it's a really interesting comparison. We know that Naoko used Greek/Roman myth for inspiration for SAilor Moon. I wonder if she maybe had that in mind as well with Maria or rather the original author of Daddy-Long-Legs did (since Maria is just an adaptation of that)? I'm glad you brought up that point. Very Happy

Club Announcement:

Magic and I have decided to close the poll a few days early cause it looks like we got a good date to go with for the live chat!  Also, we're opening up discussions a little early in case you can't wait to start spewing your love for this arc and Uranus/Neptune.

Details below! And don't forget about our discussion question of the month. Smile

PostSubject: Re: Sailor Moon Manga Reading Club [Hiatus until 2018!]   18th September 2017, 7:47 pm

Hello again!  My turn to take a few days, but I am responding back, Brit.  No worries about it taking a while; clearly I am not overly quick at the best of times, so if I got upset, lightening would strike me down, lol.

First off, I edited the above post because I am terrible with names and switched them up, so I fixed it.  Bowie's character was Jack Celliers, and I didn't look up my name.  It doesn't help that in my head I just call him "the Bowie character I like so much".  Also, apparently I need to work on my judgement skills, 'cause I totally missed which aspects of the manga were discussed.  Since we have seen that I have no idea what was discussed, I am now even more sad that I missed it.  I want to see what was going on, lol.  I am going to put Discord on my phone so I can come to the next one even if I can't borrow a computer, because there is no way mine is going to be fixed.

I don't really have much more on Daddy-Long-Legs.  If you ever have a few hours to spare, it is worth a read.  All the names are far less romantic (the leads are Judy and Jervis), but Judy amuses me.  And it is an epistolary novel, and I have a huge weakness for those.  Overall, Maria is a fairly accurate retelling, other than the changes I have already mentioned.  I do think the mythology angle is as strong there as it is in Maria, but I don't know if it is intentional.  It's not like the trope is that odd of one, after all.

I watched the film Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence years ago, in one of my college classes, and I loved it.  I am going to ignore a whole host of romantic overtones in the movie because I don't think they are relevant to this discussion, and I don't remember everything else about it, but I do recall how I found Bowie's character to be impressive, and that the generals of the POW camp were also impressed by him.  All I can really remember about him was that he was rather posh as a youth, and he tried to care for people even when the rules stated he shouldn't.  Both were aspects that I could see in Kazuma, but I don't know if the connection was intentional.  Like I said before, if it was, it helped make me like Kazuma even more, because I really, really liked Jack Celliers, and I still remember the whole film fondly.  Some of my memories might be off, and I need to rewatch the film to be sure, but it did resonate with me a lot, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

I meant for this to be short, but I failed.  I keep getting carried away... Embarassed   But I am finished for now, and I can't wait to see what everyone has to say about Vol. 6!

Yay for Discord on mobile!! It's a great app, Sailor Arkas. You won't regret it, imo.

Also, thanks so much for sharing all of that with us! I'll have to try to read Daddy Long Legs for sure, now.

I listened a bit to the piano tune while reading Maria and it was really nice. I do wonder how much Naoko meant to pull from the movie itself or just the mood of the song... Add that to the rest of the pile of questions I'd love to ask her but never will XD.

:O Ooooh I didn't know that about Greek mythology! I mean the whole Chaos/Cosmos seemed pretty obvious since the whole good/evil trope has been around for ever but I would've never thought about chaos being an originator (and i didn't know that's how it was in Greek mythology, i don't remember learning that at all xD).

With that in mind, let's do something fun. Give us your Halloween celebration headcanons for our favorite Sailor Senshi (and side characters if you want Wink) What are their favorite candies, what sort of costume would they wear, who is the most likely to be the first to get the infamous pumpkin spice latte and then over do it on pumpkin spice till December?

Give us your thoughts!

I'm sure many of you all noticed that the livechat for October is actually in November this time. Unfortunately, this month, both my schedule (i'm getting married at the end of Oct!) and Magic's are pretty hectic so we decide to just hold it a little late. Make sure you put that date in your calendar so you don't forget!
