-Part Four-
And so they left Esorian civilization behind.

They had traveled from the Falling Star Mountains and it's lush farmlands and pastures through the prairie surrounding Tumbrell and the towns beyond, and now the landscape around them changed further, becoming more arid. While grass and shrubs still grew, trees were becoming more and more scarce everywhere but near a river. The air was dry, the summer heat building, but the winds that swept the steppe kept them cool as they walked away from this last town. Beyond Viachia they would be walking off road, using whatever process they had in store to follow the star to its impact site. If they were off by a mere handful of degrees it could take weeks or months to actually find the stone, if they found it at all.

With William's map and original projection for the path of the star, the young Prince quietly calculated their position and reoriented them back towards the path of the star as best he could, keeping tight watch of the compass and the landmarks - few as there were - to keep them on track. With Viachia behind, Orvati still south and west, and the smaller village of Monderi south of them, it would be some time before they came in contact with civilization - the nearest on their present course was in Ko'bak, and while in Esoria it was law that Star Catchers were not to be helped without proper compensation or hindered (despite what happened with the outlaws...), there was no such rules in Ko'bak. Their best hope was to find the star in the open, rocky fields on this side of the national border and be able to start the return trip before reaching those lands beyond the distant mountain line that now would appear as a smudge on the western horizon.

Even without the prospect of facing the mountains and foreign country beyond, this leg of their journey would be treacherous; they were no longer traveling on kept roads. They no longer had the invisible protections those roads afforded - wildlife had no need to steer clear of them, and while that hinted at more plentiful game, it also made them open to predators like the wolves the Bramblebush twins had warned about. In addition, the winds and the lack of cover would make a fire at night stand out like a sore thumb.

The good news was that if the star had fallen on the Esorian side of the border and William had mapped the path correctly, they could find the star within two weeks and travel back to Thelline and turn it in within a month after that, making it a quick quest and a faster turn around to get on with their adult lives with the King's gifts and symbols of status. The bad news was that if it had fallen in Ko'bak, it may take a full week to navigate through the mountain range while looking for the star, and then who knew how long beyond it to locate it.

Maybe, with two Spirit-talented friends in their group, they might just get lucky...

He worked quickly, eager to keep moving and get as far away from Viachia as swiftly as possible; the moment the twins had stopped the cart he had tossed his bag to the ground, hopped out, and offered his hand to help Saphira and anyone else down, his gaze straying back the way they had come, towards the crowds heading towards the festival, ears perked for the sound of any approach down the path their wagon had taken. Once everyone was out he had snagged his bag and moved far enough from the wagon so as not to be disturbed when they finished their goodbyes and got it turned around and out of there. As the twins offered their farewells and reminders of the invitation to come back and visit anytime, he pulled the map from the makeshift pocket of his cloak and spread it carefully on the ground. Taking the small compass from another pocket and laying it carefully atop the thick paper, he carefully reoriented, found Viachia, and made diligent measurements to calculate their current position and the distances and directions to get them back on track for the star.

As the twins pulled away, making remarks about comforting disappointed fairgoers, William finished his figures and refolded the map and tucked it, along with his compass, back into his cloak. He stood, shrugging his pack back in place and adjusting the straps for comfort, and kept his eyes firmly in the direction they needed to walk. "We should be back on track in a little less than two hours," he said, "Once we get there we can adjust the pace, but to get it right I'll need to keep a certain speed or risk missing it." He glanced at the position of the sun to mark a starting time and shifted his focus to where the sun should be when they got to the adjustment spot, memorizing it. He wondered briefly what else he should say - that he apologized ahead of time if they couldn't keep up? That if they couldn't keep up then just keep travelling this way and they'd eventually run into him? Did he need to reassure them that he'd wait? ... saying any of that could come off as condescending, so he just skipped it all and started walking. It wasn't like they couldn't talk and walk at the same time.

Saphira walked beside William, still trying to think of this as their own journey, although she did not much mind the company as long as they were not trying to pick a fight. She had come to miss their solitude, the way they worked together so harmoniously in those few days when everything was peaceful and she felt closer to him than ever. And knowing what was waiting ahead—a betrayal—she almost wished they had gone on their own way and get that star for him, leaving the others behind rather than participating in this charade of working together when they were going to leave them anyway.

She chose not to comment on his remark, knowing that he knew by now that she could match his pace, and did not want to be the one who first spoke and cause conflict besides. If there were to be any arguments, she was determined not to be the person who started it. The open land around them made her nervous; there was little hiding place should a predator come upon them, but at the same time, they should be able to see most things coming from far away. She chose to keep an eye on their surroundings for the time being.

She'd read of lands like these—lands not quite barren but sparse in their greenery, dangerous in whole new ways she'd never experienced—but seeing them for the first time left her both excited and unsettled. She'd only ever lived in a town where such blank dryness spoke of drought and rough times. Families worked day and night to keep things lush and green and growing. To see such little vegetation stretch on for so long brought back those memories in full.

But at the same time, the new experience set a thrill humming in her chest. Her imagination flared into action, stories dancing to life in the space where the trees lay absent. She found herself distracted by them, even as goodbyes made the rounds with the Bramblebush twins as they departed.

Now, as the wagon trundled off into the distance, Cassandra allowed herself to focus once more on the task at hand. The adventure, the ultimate quest, was back on. Staying with the Bramblebush family and her experience in wrestling during the Viachia festival had distracted her for a while, emotions coloring her vision with such a strength that it left her breathless. But distance and time helped her reorient herself, and she felt ready to tackle this quest once more. Her family would receive a letter with a proper explanation and apology, and she was here right now with Kitty, and she would protect her. Everything was as it should be.

As Leon spoke and began to walk, setting a quick pace, Cassandra glanced to Kitty to ensure that the smaller girl was keeping up before following in his and Saphira's footsteps. "Sounds like a good plan to me," she said with a nod. "We'll keep up with whatever pace you deem proper."

She knew that Kitty and herself shouldn't have too many troubles keeping pace, their bodies were used to hard labor for hours on end, a necessity if you wanted to put food on the family table. Saphira was Saphira, was there anything that girl couldn't do? She'd have no troubles. And as Leon had been the one to set the speed, she assumed he was capable to push himself as well.

She didn't know much about Shashka's capabilities, however. But at the same time, Cassandra suspected the spitfire of a girl could fuel herself by sheer stubbornness alone.

Regardless, she'd keep an eye out on each of them, and would speak up if she saw someone struggling. They had to look out for each other now. They were a team and something akin to friends, and if they couldn't help each other, then they were doomed.

And she wasn't going to let that happen.

She had been quiet for about as long as she could take, deciding on a new tack since her mouth had been nothing but trouble. So, they had all joined forces. She still didn't know who to trust. She glanced at her "companions." I wish I could just do this on my own. Even though she hadn't actually vocalized it, passively admitting that they needed to travel as a group had felt like a defeat, one she still wasn't all settled on.

Nobody here had any particular penchant for her, that was easy enough to read. Cassandra was enamored of Kitty and Saphira was enamored of herself, dragging her clueless lover-boy alongside her. You had to wonder if he really understood what a selfish person she was, but Shashka shook herself, deciding it wasn't important if he knew. She knew it, and that was good enough. She'd remain vigilant and maintain a relative quiet - that had been working in her favor so far. She'd handle herself as best she could and then at the first opportunity, she'd forge ahead. Because she had meant what she'd said. No matter what, there was no way in hell Saphira was leaving with that star.

The taciturn, pale-haired girl remained that way as the new leg of their journey continued. She felt relieved that they were together again, but it still felt precarious. She got the feeling that Shashka hadn't quite reconciled herself to being a part of the group, and at the same time Saphira and Leo—William hadn't truly accepted her as a member of the party. She felt the slight friction of unspoken factions, but she didn't know how to resolve it. Back at home she so often played peacekeeper, but here her ability to do so seemed significantly less useful. She didn't thoroughly understand the personalities and motivations of those around her, not enough to bridge their gaps in communication. She wished she could do better, but she feared bungling the attempt and making things worse.

With that weight on her mind, all she could do was continue onward. The pace William set didn't bother her. Much like Cassandra, it took a lot to tire the diminutive girl out. She lived on a ranch—she knew hard work. In many ways, this Star Catcher trial had been less-vigorous than the Trials she participated in prior to her coming of age and the general work required around the ranch. Her brothers might have teased her for taking a vacation, had they been privy to this. Perhaps they would, when she got home. If she got home.

Well... he had supposed they could walk and talk at the same time, but that made the assumption that anyone wanted to talk. Cassandra remarked on the pace and her unspoken assurance that they'd be able to follow it, but no one else offered any words at all. He felt like he knew why Saphira was staying quiet - she didn't want to chance an argument with Shashka - but the fiery girl wasn't saying anything, either, and neither was soft-spoken Kitty. Before everything could lapse back into the silence they had traveled in over a week ago after leaving Tumbrel, he attempted to engage Cassandra. Glancing apologetically back at her, he explained, "It's less 'what I deem proper' and more 'what I was trained to get used to' in order to pace out distances effectively without resorting to counting carefully measured steps." He looked ahead, continuing to offer, "One of those 'tricks of the trade' you pick up in a trial, you know?" he paused, considering, and added as an invitation to share, "Did you pick up any odd tricks like that?

It wasn't that he considered travelling in silence bad, but this silence was uneasy, and he'd rather attempt to make it comfortable than risk an explosion later, or have everyone assume that silence was the preferred volume level at all times. That and he wanted to get to know them better - at least attempt to learn what they were after before they get to the end.

She stared at Leon/William and clenched her stomach muscles in an effort to stop herself from rolling her eyes. He was probably prodding Cassandra for exploitable weaknesses on his princess' command. You could never trust someone who hadn't even introduced themselves using their real name. He reminds me of a dog, for some reason, she thought. Maybe because I can see Saphira kicking him. Her mind wandered down this line of reasoning, imagining a cartoon version of the boy sitting on command. Seems about right. She smirked, despite herself.

So, no one else seemed chatty. William was trying to engage Cassandra, but Saphira found herself quickly losing interest in the conversation. She didn't want to know what the others were capable of. She didn't want to get to know them better only to stab them in the back later and having to worry about it. Well, to be quite precise, she didn't want to do that to Kitty and Cassandra. She was kind of looking forward to stabbing Shashka in the back.

The story William had shared with her was troubling her, however, and so her mind focused on that, wondering how long it had been going on and how it all started. There could certainly be a riot if everyone knew... would William even still be king, then? Once he exposed the conspiracy? Would the people still trust him? She had no idea. She hoped he could be, because he deserved it, but right now she had the feeling their immediate concern should be about staying alive and getting the star first. And then surviving whatever awaited them with the King.

Silence never unnerved her much. When left alone, she learned to find conversation in the wind, the calling of birds, and the wide expanse of the sky. All of it a grand theatre for the stories brimming in her imagination.

But here, it felt wrong, somehow. Palpable tension despite no one giving any outward hints towards annoyance or frustrations. Considering how fragile their alliance turned out last time they all teamed up, she supposed it wasn't so surprising. Although they'd teamed up once more, it would take time for old fissures to close. Cassandra wasn't certain how to get everyone to see the potential of the alliance, but she hoped that things would begin to mesh between them all soon. It was how it all worked in the stories, after all, so why not here?

At Leon's question, Cassandra paused in her thoughts, suddenly struck by the reminder that Leon was actually Prince William. A prince. Before, she'd not had much trouble thinking of the reserved and intelligent Leon to be of Royal blood, but it hadn't felt quite real. To hear of his own Trials, so different from her own, brought a sense of substance to the idea. She wondered what other Trials a prince would train in. Swordfighting? Of course. All princes used swords. Political intrigue? Definitely, all the best stories had those delicate details hidden on the pages. The intricate inner workings of saving damsels in distress?

Perhaps it was Saphira who trained in the latter. She'd done enough saving of them all throughout the quest for the star pieces that it would make sense.

She turned her attention back onto the topic. "Odd tricks?" she repeated, slow and pondering. She shook her head. "In Lorham, you don't take up any Trials that don't better your understanding of your destined craft. Whether you come from a family of farmers or shepherds, you train in various ways to ensure that you can do that job in the best way possible. And even better if you can make things easier for you and your family by using those particular skills."

She paused, before continuing with a laugh on her lips, chagrin coloring her expression. "If we run into a hay farm that needs help, I'm your gal. That's what my family has done for generations." It felt strange, to say this to someone with as grand a life as a prince, but she wasn't embarrassed. Not exactly. More resigned than anything. She'd never truly accepted her lot in life, but she didn't reject it either. She'd never stop reaching for the stars even if she ended up back in the mud at the end of the day.

She could have listed more skills, but all of them were equally as mundane and entirely unhelpful in their current situation. That was a large part of why she'd taken the dive and went on this quest in the first place. For the experience. "I did have a knack for pelting strangers with far too many questions about their travels when I Trialed at the local tavern." She smiled, half-amused and half-abashed. "But no. No odd tricks up these sleeves, I'm afraid."

She thought of the one time when she'd wished for rain with all her might, and had been rewarded with a small shower to relieve overly thirsty soil. But that was a private thought. She'd never shared that before, unwilling to claim that victory as her own.

Instead, Cassandra turned to glance at the rest of the group. She wondered what they had as skills, now that the topic lay heavy in the air. It was good to know what your allies were capable of, so that they could work together like a seamless team. She already had a good grasp of what Kitty would have learned, it being much the same as her own. And she'd seen what Saphira was capable of several times over. Shashka, on the other hand... she knew so little about the recently silent girl.

"How about you, Shashka? What sort of things did you learn in your Trials?" She smiled, genuinely curious. What kind of place could have bred a girl with such a spitfire demeanor?

He listened to Cassandra as he walked, carefully stepping around small shrubs in his path and getting immediately back onto the imaginary line he had drawn for their heading. Her explanation of Trials in Lorham puzzled him; that, despite what he had considered the driving principle of the trial, teens there were still expected to join a "destined" craft, obviously, by her words, meaning the craft your family was already in. He had considered the trials to be freeing - that young people (other than himself, of course) could use them to guide their own decisions in life and pursue careers that fit them best, rather than continuing in the mold their parents had created before them. He considered the feeling it gave him - on the one hand, he felt like they were being cheated out of a decision that was meant to be selfish to make the most out of life and enjoy it as best they could, while on the other, he knew how important family and connections like family was to them; even being around Cassandra and Kitty for the short period of time that he had made that obvious. Did they know, though? Surely, they had to know that following in their family's footsteps wasn't the only choice available to them - in fact, wasn't that what the Star Catcher trial was all about? Securing a way out?

He wanted to ask her more about it - maybe even see why she had taken up this trial - and waited patiently, learning more about her as she continued. He cracked a smile at her hay farm reference, and her mention of her time trialing with a tavern seemed to fit with her, but it was curious... how did working  tavern reinforce skills needed to run a hay farm? Maybe that was her attempt to step out of her family's line? Was that why she was here? He was about to ask her more when she suddenly turned the conversation towards Shashka, and he kept his mouth shut.

Honestly, finding out more about the argumentative girl was for the best. He knew very little about her - besides her abrasive nature and her tendency - in his experience, anyway - to threaten first, ask questions later - think later, it seemed more like, but she had reacted to insinuations of lost honor so there could be some common ground there. It had seemed like he and she had come to an understanding after they had gone hunting that week ago, but he had no idea what that fight with Saphira had been about, beyond that the breaking point had been when she had used Charles as a way to lash out. She had wanted to stay together, then sworn to get to the star before them and had passed out on the road in her determination to do that, and then apparently rejoined with Cassandra and Kitty after that point, so whether she wanted to actually be alone or had just wanted to stick it to Saphira was up in the air. That she had so easily accepted his offer to travel together again had honestly thrown him, and her silence this morning felt more like a storm brewing than peaceful quiet.

Yeah, he wanted to learn more about Cassandra, but he wasn't going to turn down an opportunity to learn more about Shashka.

Hearing Cassandra speak of her Trials brought a smile to Kitty's face, reminding of her own. She'd done a Trial on the hay farm, after all, and it wasn't her only crop-based bit of labor. The local farms never turned down a teenager, whether energetic or morose; the Trials provided season after season of help. She'd learned a lot during her years of exploration, but like her schoolmate she wasn't sure if any of it counted towards William's inquiry. She knew a few "tricks"—flatness matters more than smoothness when scraping plaster, don't grip too hard or you'll rub your hands raw on the churn, using poor wood makes a poor chest, cuts in the hide ruin before the leather's even made... She didn't think they'd come in handy here. Kitty hadn't anticipated taking up this journey; it hadn't been an idea in her mind until so close to the trip to Mount Everlast.

She tilted her head, looking at Shashka with brightness in her stormy eyes, wondering what the Trials had been like for the non-Lorhammie.

She frowned. They're talking to me again. "You know. I trapped stuff, ate things. There was some spice trading." She tried to make it sound natural, but it was clear to even her own ears that she was clamming up. To talk about her prowess with lockpicking or training with the militia would only give Saphira information to use against her later... and, considering how hard the girl punched, Shashka figured she didn't need any extra ammunition. Still, I have to tell them something or they'll just keep asking. The bird necklace thumped against her leg, the metal of it bouncing in her pocket with each step. "I can smelt. Jewelry and stuff. My Papa owns a shop."

She didn't say much, but he extrapolated what he could. Being from Deepwall meant that mining and the trades surrounding it was a key point to the structure of the town she grew up in, giving him a very general backdrop. 'Trapped stuff' meant she had trialed with trappers, which made sense as she had used those traps to catch rabbits; it also hinted that she hadn't just survived the woods but had perhaps thrived in them, if her trapping trial had been more of a month-long immersion into trapper lifestyle than daily lessons. 'Ate stuff' was either sass or meant she had perhaps trialed with bakers? Or cooks of some sort? Spice trading was a rather lucrative business - the trader had to have connections with people - typically in Orvati - in order to thrive in the business enough to allow them to take on teenagers in their trials. Had she met any of her trialmaster's contacts? She didn't seem exactly diplomatic but she had had no reason to behave in such a way towards him, so he would have no reason to know how polite she could be if she chose to be. So, trapping, perhaps foodcrafts, trading - it was rather varied, which was a positive remark towards the Trials doing what they were supposed to do.

She seemed like she was going to stop there, but finally continued, admitting that her family ran a jewelry business. Crafters, perhaps part of a guild. Probably took advantage of the natural gems mined right in town - a great deal of the jewelsmith works from Deepwall made it to Thelline and had their own specific notoriety for the clarity of the gems, and when cut a specific way the stones seemed almost to shine from within; if he paid a little more attention to such things he might've been able to place her father, but... he hadn't taken much of an interest in specific craftsmen.

"His works must be beautiful," he commented with interest, attempting to keep her talking and open up more, "Gems from the Starfall Mountains always have a particular shine to them. Does he have a particular gem he favors in his works?"

She half listened to the others talk, shelving the information for later use, but her attention wasn't fully in it. 'Spice trading' perked up her ears, but her family still got the monopoly in Shadeslake, so she wasn't overly concerned about it. Besides, Shashka didn't say it was her family's job. She said they were jewelers. Saphira couldn't imagine the girl having the patience to do intricate things, but she didn't particularly care about digging deeper into it. Once again, she found herself missing the comfortable silence between her and William, and her mind also briefly wandered towards her parents. Were they worried at all? Maybe they had crossed her name out of their will. If she came home, would they even still let her go back to her old job? Failure had never been an option before, but now... But William did promise he'd open doors for her. That had to be enough.

She continued to focus her attention on their surroundings, sometimes even looking back to check if anyone was there. If everyone else was determined on talking, she should at least be keeping guard.

From Shashka's frowning expression, Cassandra worried that her question hadn't been taken as a genuine prompt of curiosity, that perhaps Shashka wouldn't answer or had even taken offense to it all. She knew so little about Shashka as a whole besides the fact that her temper flared wildly and with unexpected ferocity. Would this question light that fuse?

But her worries were put to rest as Shashka opened up, just a little bit. Her thoughts wandered a little, pondering about the labor of trapping and smelting. The smelting in particular pressed at her curiosity and imagination, as it seemed so intricate a process. She knew the general idea of it, but how amazing must it be to take a lump of something relatively uninteresting and turn it into something beautiful?

Cassandra's smile widened as Leon continued the conversation. A small victory, but a victory nonetheless. This was how it all started. In her books, the haphazardly thrown together group grew closer as they shared their own personal stories with one another. And now that was happening here as well. Surely this bode well for their group in the here and now.

Of course, Saphira remained silent and unreadable, and Kitty still preferred to keep quiet more often then not...Not to mention the remnants of tension still clung like poison in the air around them, but this was a start at least!

She didn't want to interrupt Leon's own questions, so instead she listened, smile still in place. She glanced to Kitty, wondering if the her fellow Lorhammie shared her excitement at this new development. They'd wanted to keep everyone together, even after it all blew up around them. Her eyes lingered for a moment, before turning her attention back onto Shashka.

So Shashka's father, who she spoke of so reverently, crafted jewelry. Kitty had done a Trial with a goldsmith—she wondered how much of what she learned there related to what the girl from Deepwall grew up around. She wondered if for the dark-eyed young woman, watching her father create jewelry felt at all the same as Kitty did when she watched her mother bake. Although the two activities remained unique, the pale-haired girl felt like there were enough similarities. To some extent, her mother's baking felt like magic. Each finished item sparkled like a treasure.

Kitty had always been in awe of it, even as she grew up and learned to cook and bake on her own. Even now that she could bake as well as her mother, she didn't feel the same sense of wonder looking at her own pastries as she felt when she observed the same from her mother's work.

Her gray-blue eyes surveyed the area, noting the flat stretches of land and the lack of most vegetation. In a way, she almost missed the forests, even though they could so easily concealed potential harm or danger. She turned and caught Cassandra's eye for a moment, returning the smile with a delicate one of her own. Like her classmate, she wanted this reunion to work. She wanted the group to travel together, with a common goal, and share success.

She hoped that wasn't too much to ask...

What's he playing at?

She inhaled the scent of the farm road. Nature always helped to organize her thoughts, and the still quiet let her attention focus more easily. Is he messing with me? Bringing up gems... is he hinting at being rich and powerful? So tactless. She cleared her throat. "Emeralds." They were my mother's favorite, she almost said. Papa would always say they matched her eyes, and she would laugh. But, no. These travelers didn't need to know intimate details. She just needed to feed them enough to get them to get them off her back, but the interrogation was making her thin patience wear thinner. Just how many questions do they plan to ask? she thought with annoyance. They certainly were making it difficult to be quiet.

It almost sounded like her short answer would have been elaborated on, but in the end she remained stubbornly silent. He took in an even, easy breath and considered options. Yes, he had the willpower to continue on with questions in an attempt to get her talking, but as he had no specific information he was trying to get out of her he didn't exactly have training in this type of conversation. All he wanted was to get rid of the stiff, awkward feeling between them. He had thought showing interest and learning more about each other might get them somewhere, but he was getting the impression that if he continued on Shashka could open up but chances may be better that she'd snap. ... which, if she did, it could at least give a little insight as to why she was so stiff to begin with.

...Honestly now could be the "safest" time to pursue it; if she got annoyed enough at other places or times she may try to start a fight or something, but at the moment - he checked the sun's position - if he stopped moving they were pretty much out of luck with finding the right path to the Star. His brow furrowed: he had wondered what their strategy for finding it was / had been before they joined up together, as he hadn't seen anyone else's map or compass or anything - but he quickly put that train of thought aside as thinking about it now or asking about it now may make things end up way worse than the current interpersonal issue was.

"Emeralds are nice," he commented, continuing to keep his eyes forward on the scrubby terrain, "Are they your favorites as well?"

She didn't see anything suspicious... for now. Saphira kept her guard up regardless and kept watch, only half listening to the conversation around her. She wasn't sure why William was so interested in Shashka, but maybe it was a strategic thing. As he spoke about favorite gemstones, Saphira's thoughts flew towards her prized ruby necklace, her favorite jewelry. The stone had always been near and dear to her, aside from it being her birthstone, she also loved the shade of red that was the same as her own hair.

She could only hope this journey would not last long. She missed her possessions, and living like a common person had certainly begun to take its toll on her.

Emeralds. She tried to remember if she'd ever seen an emerald before. She didn't think so, though she did know they were typically known for their vivid green color. One of her favorite stories spoke of a king with a large emerald set into his royal crown. She always imagined a shiny rock, translucent and faceted to catch the light, an object seeming to hold a bit of its own special magic within its sparkling depths. Something reminiscent of the deepest forests, the growth of strong trees.

She could see why Shashka's father would enjoy such a thing.

She did wish that Shashka had been a little more forthcoming with her details, however. But Cassandra counted it as a small victory nonetheless. At least she'd given an answer at all. The tension still lingered in the air, constricting and tight, but perhaps the groundwork of bridging the gap between them had been set.

As Leon continued the conversation, asking another question of their terse companion, Cassandra took the time to look around at their surroundings, so different from what she grew up knowing. She wondered if any new sights had popped up in the time she'd looked away to speak to her group. Something she'd never seen before, something new and exciting.

After all, if this was the only chance she'd get for adventure, she'd need to ensure she took in every single detail.

When the first arrow hit then bounced off of William, Saphira's heart leapt to her throat. She whipped her head around, just in time to see the second arrow whiz past her in the direction of William again. The fact that it didn't hurt him was only a small comfort to the cold, irrational, seizing fear she felt at the thought of losing him. It wasn't until that moment that she realized how scared she was of living in a world where he didn't exist, and the thought nearly paralyzed her.

In the distance, she saw the figure behind one of the bushes, another arrow in hand and advancing fast.

"Get down!" she told William as she stepped in the path between the assassin and the prince, blocking his direct line to his target. At the same time, she pulled out her own spear and threw it with all her might towards the enemy, even as her mind raced with the possibilities of who could be after him. A palace guard, perhaps? Someone who had figured out his true intentions for the King? Was it someone the King himself sent? She knew being recognized back in town was going to have consequences, and again she wished she had advised him to keep his cloak on. What if he died because of the decision she made back then? What if she ended up inadvertently killing him?

She would never be able to live with it.

He stumbled forward as something hard pelted him in the back, a metallic clang ringing out, and he scowled in incredulous frustration - what was her problem?! He regained his balance, grabbing the straps of his pack so as not to fall as his legs continued forward - he wasn't going to lose the star just because someone couldn't keep their temper in check - even as he half-turned to face her down and demand an explanation for that and everything else. Only, as he half-turned he was pelted again, sent staggering again, and a clear sight of Shashka showed it wasn't her doing. Heart being quickly, annoyance shifted to determination as he realized they were under attack from an outside force rather than an internal one. He regained his balance a second time, satisfied in his earlier preparation to have the shield covering his pack and other implements, and searched to find their attacker --

"Get down!

Saphira quickly inserted herself between him and whomever was firing at them and his nerves jumped all at once. She didn't have any protection beyond the cloak -

Before she could answer, a shot rang out through the wilderness. Shashka whirled around to see an assassin, volleying a bevy of arrows at William. She made up her mind almost instantly. This was the break she'd be waiting for. She turned heel and darted forward, trying to overtake William and run ahead through the scrub. I'm not dying for you, she thought as she sprinted.  He hadn't done nearly enough to earn her trust or help, or even enough for her to care about his fate. True to her nature, her only aim was to save her own skin.

He couldn't just let her take the arrow.

As Shaska took off he reached out, grabbed Saphira and pulled her in close, pivoting on his toes so the shield was presented again to the archer. Without a word he ducked his head nearer to her to make that part of him less of a target and braced his legs for the next impact, fumbling with her cloak to pull her hood over her head, too; the fabric was said to be piercing resistant, and anything at this point helped. Shashka continued past them, running over the sparse grass landscape at his original heading, and he dropped any notion of continuing until this threat had passed. Instead he kept count under his breath, estimating the time that had passed since he had stopped and continuing, "seven, eight," while keeping track of the arrows that had been fired - 2 - which meant there was probably either 8, 10 or 13 left in the attacker's quiver. He wondered if - halfway hoping that - Cassandra and Kitty would follow Shashka's lead and get out of there.

At first, nothing seemed too different than she'd seen earlier. Sparse vegetation, gentle foothills, mountains in the far distance. It made for the perfect backdrop for adventure.

Her musings were cut short as a bad feeling clutched at her, and she frowned. Crystal clear instinct screamed at her, and she heard the thin whistling of memories as she turned. The arrow piercing through the air, heading straight for Leon.

She made to tell him, to stop the arrow, to do something, but it was far too late, the arrow finding its target before the situation fully caught up with her.

She closed her eyes, unwilling to see, just for a moment, as she remembered another arrow sunk deep into the soft tissue of a friendly face.

She braced herself for the worst, hand reaching for her flail, and opened her eyes. Leon looked okay, though, and relief washed over her. She let out a hitched breath, hearing the threatening song of another arrow singing through the air, and moved to ensure that she stood between Kitty and their attacker. Cassandra turned to face Kitty then, trying not to let herself become too distracted by the fear of something happening to her. "Please, find cover, quickly!"

Cassandra knew that Shashka was already gone, running for safety in a blur of motion. She wouldn't let a sense of betrayal distract her, adrenaline pumping in her veins like fire. No. A battle brewed before her, and she was ready. She looked to Leon, the way he shielded Saphira from incoming attacks. She wanted to help them, too, whether it was to engage in battle or to run to safety. She might not be as well trained as they, but she'd do her best no matter what.

"Do we run? Or do we fight?" Without waiting for an answer, she drew out her flail proper—already missing the reassuring weight of her axe now that a potential enemy stood ahead. "I'll support you." It was not fair, perhaps, to defer to his leadership, but his intelligence and his Trial preparations guided them to the fabled star and she hoped it could guide them in this too.

She'd be ready no matter which way he chose for their group. She glanced back, for only a moment, to ensure that Kitty sought out cover and that she herself presented as much of a physical wall between any incoming arrows, before turning her attention back onto the dire situation.
